Amicus Student Law Clinic

Donation protected
This year, the Women and Law Society at the University of Exeter has been given an incredible opportunity to establish a student law clinic working in partnership with Amicus ALJ, a charity dedicated to supporting individuals facing the death penalty in the United States.

Amicus ALJ works with capital defence teams, helping to ensure that those on death row receive adequate legal representation and access to justice. Many individuals facing execution in the US rely on small, under-resourced defence teams, and organisations like Amicus play a vital role in assisting with the enormous amount of case preparation required.

As part of this collaboration, students in our Student Law Clinic help review case materials, conduct legal research, and assist with case preparation that supports attorneys representing individuals facing capital punishment. This work contributes to safeguarding fair trial rights and due process in cases where the ultimate punishment, execution by the state, is at stake.

The death penalty remains one of the most serious and controversial issues in criminal justice. In capital cases, the consequences of inadequate representation can be irreversible. By supporting organisations like Amicus, we aim to contribute to ensuring that every individual, regardless of background or resources, receives proper legal support when their life is on the line.

To continue running this clinic next academic year, we need to raise £1,000. These funds will allow us to:
  • Maintain the partnership with Amicus ALJ
  • Provide training and resources for student volunteers
  • Cover the administrative costs required to run the clinic
  • Enable more Exeter students to contribute meaningful legal support to capital defence work

This clinic provides students with a unique opportunity to engage with real casework, develop practical legal skills, and contribute to an important area of international human rights and criminal justice.

Every donation, no matter the size, will help us keep this vital clinic running and continue supporting the work of Amicus in defending individuals facing the death penalty.

Thank you for supporting our mission to promote access to justice and fair representation where it matters most.
