American Legion 671 Restoration

Donation protected
As Service Officer for American Legion Post 671 I went to Home Depot on S. Georgia St. for help with a Grant Request to remodel our facility that has been serving our Veterans since 1929. I often wonder how many Veterans from all wars, all conflicts have walked these floors. Home Depot Approved the Grant $24,800. This was only the beginning.

This brings us to our asking your help to complete our retoration. Our electrical system must be replaced and updated. We need heat and air conditioning, wall units just don't get the job done when we have a full house.

$1.00 turns into $50.00, $50.00 turns into $100.00.  If all of our friends, families near and far will chip in what ever you can we can get this done together. We ask that every Veteran that sees this post will help us. We will be asking every American Legion Post and Auxillaries donate what they can. In turn, when others request our help we will respond and do what ever we can to help you. WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!

GOD BLESS!!!

VETERANS CONTINUE TO SERVE!

American Legion Post 671 has 144 members and we are growing.

As a part of Texas Panhandle District 18 we have an impact on over 2500 Veterans.

 Facility:

Ø  Provides a safe place for all veterans and families of all branches of service, all wars and conflicts.  Drugs, smoking and alcohol free environment.

Ø  We provide furlough camp for veterans.

Ø  Veterans provide meals; breakfasts, lunch and supper to all for donations.  (all donations are used for utilities, supplies and special veteran and family needs.)

Ø  We provide appreciation dinners for veterans and first responders.

Ø  The post sponsors dinner and dance functions for veterans and youth.

Ø  We are a Community Emergency Response Team post (C.E.R.T.) and Texas State Militia (TSM) support unit. Veterans provide the C.E.R.T. training to be proficient in supporting emergency response teams in the Texas panhandle.  Natural disasters common to us are storms and tornados causing flooding, power outages, potable water shortages, food and medical shortages.  Wildfires require support for the firefighters.  We help provide food, water, medical supplies for firefighters and those in need.

Ø  Veterans provide firearms safety, maintenance and self-defense training.  Veterans teach, supervise the step by step safety at the rifle range and teach target shooting skills.

Ø  Veterans have access to computers to research their Veterans Administration benefits, health care and job searches.

Ø  Veterans provide transportation for other veterans to the ER and doctor’s appointments day or night.

Ø  We provide help to veterans with addictions.

Ø  Veterans provide assistance to other veterans with their VA claims and benefits.

Ø  Veterans have access have access to big screen video games and online gaming.  This is important as they are able to have contact with their buddies still overseas, this is part of their healing process.

Ø  Veterans supervise and play charitable bingo.  We play table games such as chess and checkers.  This gives veterans the opportunity to make friends and share our stories with other veterans.  A major part of our healing process.

Ø  We have an agreement with the City of Borger, Animal Control to provide veterans needing Service Dogs from the shelter are matched with veterans and training provided.

Ø  We host equine therapy for panhandle veterans.

Ø  We provide assistance for homeless veterans and local people. Meals, clothing, anything we have the safe means to help.

Ø  We will accept that phone call, text message in the middle of the night from any veteran that is in crisis. We refuse to accept that on average 22 veterans take their own life every day. There is hope, there is help. Veterans understand Veterans.

Ø  Veterans provide our honor guard/ 21gun salute, TAPS services for our fallen.

Ø  Veterans provide POW/MIA remembrance tables at the Veterans Administration medical center and local restaurants.

Ø  Our post is open to those that need shelter during harsh weather conditions, power outages or life threatening outside conditions.

Ø  We provide homeless veterans with bicycles. Local individuals and the businesses donate bicycles, which with our partnership with the Veterans Resource Center are matched with homeless veterans to facilitate low cost transportation for job applications, work and medical appointments. Allows an effective means integrating the veteran back into the community.

Ø  We sponsor Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.

Ø  Veterans supervise and participate in semiannual flag retirements with the boy scouts, local firefighters and local police officers.  This often gives veterans closure as these flags represent the country we fought for.  It also gives us veterans a sense of serving and being a part of our community.

Ø  Our post, district and Legion provide annual youth scholarships.

Ø  Veterans participate in the annual Howdy Neighbor Day and Christmas parades with family, children and community.

Ø  Veterans annually provides school supplies to class room teachers and needy children that were donated by the community at local Dollar Tree locations.

Ø  Veterans provide Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for less fortunate veterans and families.

Ø  Veterans conduct holiday visits to the VA/CLC (nursing home) patients providing hygiene supplies, table games, and entertainment by our youths.  This is part of our healing process as we know most of them will be never go home.

Ø  Veterans and Auxiliary provide the “Fight Like a Girl” courses.  (Women learning how to defend themselves.)

Ø  We provide a local safe place for veterans and our neighbors to sell their garage sale and flea market items.

Ø  After the post remodeling is complete veterans and youth will create murals on the upper walls depicting each branch of service and then each war we have fought.

Ø  Veterans enjoy being together; encouraging all veterans to join us. We have cat fish fries, crawfish and shrimp boils, picnics at the park.

Ø  Veterans coordinate getting names on the Hutchinson County Veterans Memorial.

Our post is the home of “Bear Team Five”.
