Amelia Walks for Diabetes

2021 is 10 years since I heard the words, "Amelia's got diabetes", I didn't at the time realise just how shocking this awful condition was going to be. I said to the nurse standing with me in the hospital, "It's not that bad is it?" Its only diabetes, loads of people have that don't they?...

But she cant talk, she's completely none verbal, she's autistic, how am I going to know what to do? How am I going to cope? She's already got so many other things going on, surely this cant be happening ?.....

We quickly got to know the nurse, she wasn't just any old nurse, she was Sister Jane Humphries. She was there night and day at the end of the phone, during many hospital admissions, she was always by Amelia's side, and mine. She quickly became our absolute rock, she's heard about all the worry, the guilt, the sleepless nights, everything. Having her around is an absolute lifeline.

Fast forward 10 years and not only is Amelia coping well with her diabetes, her HbA1c was 7.3 last time! (If you know, you know) She has recently had the Libre fitted and is managing the condition extremely well. We've all learnt to live with this awful condition.

Now its time for us to do something for Jane and the diabetes team at Burton Hospital. Every year for all of the children and their families the team put on an amazing Christmas party, followed by the annual trip to the Regent Theatre's Pantomime in Stoke. As Covid has stopped the world there hasn't been the chance to fundraise like they normally do. This is where Amelia comes in, she wants to do a sponsored walk around Chasewater, not just once, 10 times! one for every year.

We know its been a hard year financially for everyone, but we really want to reach her target of £500.
