Facing Eviction After Domestic Violence
Donation protected
We all know times are tough, but right now, our friend Alec needs our help.
In late November, Alec was the victim of an unprovoked domestic violence attack by a former roommate, who was arrested, charged, and pled guilty to battery. Alec successfully petitioned for a two-year Order of Protection for his safety, which forced this individual out of their shared lease.
However, while legal protection ensured his physical safety, it did nothing to relieve the financial burden—leaving him responsible for triple the rent overnight.
For the past three months, Alec has worked tirelessly to find a new roommate, but in the midst of Chicago’s economic downturn, last-minute setbacks have left him unable to fill the space. Worse, this crisis has hit during the slowest season in the freelance A/V industry (December–March), when work is scarce, and he and his peers are already operating on bare-minimum budgets. Despite exhausting every possible avenue—including state-funded homelessness prevention services, which are currently frozen or inaccessible due to restrictive policies—he now faces eviction with nowhere to turn.
We’re asking for the community’s help to cover just the past three months of owed rent so Alec can remain in his home. The goal is to stabilize his situation until March 1st, when he is confident a new roommate will be secured, allowing him to return to self-sufficiency.
Anything helps. We wouldn’t be asking if every other option hadn’t been exhausted—this is truly the last resort, and time is critical.
Let’s come together and support a friend in need. Thank you.
