Greetings!
3 youth commissioners from Macon-Bibb County in Middle Georgia have been accepted into the"Ambassadors in Sneakers - A Young Leaders’ Transatlantic Summer Academy on Human Rights" program. They will be traveling to Germany and across the United States to gain knowledge on human rights. We are kindly asking for donations to help offset some costs.
"Ambassadors in Sneakers - A Young Leaders’ Transatlantic Summer Academy on Human Rights" is a four-week educational program that brings together youth councils from Germany and the USA in the summers of 2017, 2018, and 2019. The central focus is on the topic of human rights. It is against this background that participants learn about both countries’ political structures and international networking. While traveling together in the USA and Germany, the young leaders become familiar with important places and institutions that are significant for developing and defending human rights. At a time when thousands are fleeing their homelands due to political/religious persecution, war, and famine, human rights, and their violations are topics that young people often question. During their trips, they meet activists, people affected by recent events, media representatives, speakers, and politicians in Germany and the USA, and have the opportunity to learn from them and with them, thus helping gain a fuller perspective on the issues at hand.
The Transatlantic Summer Academy 2018 will take place in two parts:
Part 1: Hamburg & Berlin (Sat. May 19 - Sat. Jun. 2, 2018)
Part 2: Atlanta/Birmingham & New York City (Sat. Jul. 21 - Sat. Aug. 4, 2018)

Keylem, Macon-Bibb County Youth Commissioner
Edna is a Junior at Central High School where she is an Honor Student, Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, and the International Thespian Honor Society. She volunteers as a tutor Alexander II Magnet School, serves meals to the homeless, and prepares snacks and refreshments for youth soccer practices. Recently, she was selected as the Distinguished Young Woman of Bibb County and the First Place Winner of the local Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Competition. Edna believes, “If today's youth are to become good and responsible
citizens in the future, [they] must be informed and knowledgeable of current events at all levels of government.” Edna is a first-year member of the Macon-Bibb county GCAPS Youth Commission.
Bhavin is a Junior at Stratford Academy where he is the Key Club Executive Officer. He leads the Georgia Secretary of State Student Ambassador Program at his school and is a Key Club International Division Lieutenant Governor. Additionally, he received the Jefferson Award which is the nation’s longest standing and most prestigious award given for dedication to public service. He believes, “Civic education is highly important for today's youth because it teaches teenagers like me to be actively involved in our government,
not just locally, but internationally. If youth develop skills and values from civic education, they are most likely to be well trained and
apprehensive about our government when they are older.” Bhavin is a first-year member of the Macon-Bibb county GCAPS Youth
Commission.
Keylem is a junior at Rutland High School having recently moved to Macon. As a part of the military community, Keylem has traveled the globe and in the Army JROTC and qualified for their summer program JCLC.
