Hi everyone! As some of you know, I recently rescued a dog in October. Her name is Amaya, she is a 3 year old German Shepherd/Black Lab mix, and she is an absolute sweetheart. Amaya was rescued from an abusive home and was very timid and scared around others, but now is an energetic pup who knows no personal boundaries and thinks she’s a lap dog despite being 70lbs! She has stolen my heart and she has definitely rescued me in some ways (it’s cheesy, but it’s true).
After taking her to the vet for a checkup, I was informed that she has a severe heart murmur and needed to see a cardiologist. I took her to MedVet for her appointment and was given some bad news. Her heart murmur led to the discovery of not only 1 heart condition, but 3. Amaya has severe pulmonic stenosis (a congenital heart defect that causes thickened pulmonic valve leaflets that do not open as well as they should to provide blood flow) which has caused a thickening of the right ventricle walls in her heart, due to the large amount pressure is needed to pump blood. In addition to that she has patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) (a condition in which a vessel that should close shortly after birth remains open) and mild tricuspid valve dysplasia (a malformation of the tricuspid valve that allows a small amount of leakage backward through the valve). The PDA is currently helping Amaya keep a small amount of blood flow separate from what her heart is pumping.
Because of all of these conditions, the vet has recommended surgery. As you can probably imagine, the cardiologist appointment alone was almost $1,000, how much would surgery be? The answer is it could cost well up to $6,000. The surgery would entail the team going in and inserting a balloon into her pulmonic valve to try to open the valve’s leaflets as much as possible. The surgery, if successful, could reduce the pressure needed to pump blood by about 50%. Amaya is currently severely limited in her activity level due to her condition. If she has a sudden burst of energy (like any normal puppy) it could be detrimental to her life. I can tell she wants to run around and keep up with all the friends she meets, but sadly, she cannot. It breaks my heart. I know she is happy to be around people who love her now, and I want to try to give her the best life possible. To do that, I need a little help. This is a very expensive procedure that I unfortunately do not have off-hand. I appreciate any donation you may be able to offer, even if its just a little prayer. I want to try to give this young girl a chance at a longer, healthier, happier life. If you prefer to give cash, check, or donation through Venmo (@Rachel-Payne-62), please let me know. All donations will go towards her surgery and any future vet appointments she needs due to her condition. Thank you in advance for anything given and Amaya thanks you too! Much love <3!
