These are students the Amartya Foundation has been sponsoring for the past 2 years.
In January 2019 we started the adult education programme with 16 students, at the local school in Siansowa, rural Zambia. The students ages range between 25 and 45. Adult illiteracy rates in rural Zambia are amongst the highest in the world, with many people never finishing their primary or secondary education.
We're really happy to announce that by the end of 2020 we are up to 30 students, and 13 of those have now received their grade 9 diploma! This means that those students will go on to secondary education (grade 10-12) in 2021!
To fund the 2021 school year for all 30 students, we would really appreciate your help!
How will your donation contribute?
- If you donate 20 euros, you sponsor 1 primary student for a full year
- If you donate 50 euros, you sponsor 1 secondary student for a full year
Breakdown of total needed amount
We have 17 primary students, whose school fees are k510 (20 euros) each for a full year. That amounts to a total of k8,670 for the whole class, or 335 euros (current exchange rate).
For the 13 students who have passed to secondary school, school fees k1200 (50 euros) each for a full year. This amounts to a total of k15,600 for the whole class, or 602 euros.
Background
At the Amartya Foundation we believe that the best way to contribute to sustainable development is by focusing on education, pride and ownership rather than dependency, volunteerism and aid. As Amartya Sen said: Poverty is not just a lack of money, it is not having the freedom to realize one’s full potential as a human being. That is why the Amartya Foundation provides school sponsorships, because we believe that being able to go to school is a freedom that everybody should have, regardless of age, gender or socio-economic background.
