Amanda's Road to Recovery

Introduction:
My sister, Amanda Thomas, was in a head on collision in November 2014 which resulted in a Traumatic Brain Injury.  She was in a coma for 2 months following a hard road to recovery.  Amanda's friends and family have been so helpful in providing assistance and support throughout Amanda's road to recovery and we can't thank you enough for everything you all have done. Amanda has given the best parts of herself to other people her whole life.  She’s a dedicated sister, aunt, daughter, and loyal friend. Most important is Amanda’s ability to make everyone smile and feel better, even after a friend's father passed, or Amanda made the trip to Calgary while a friend received Cancer treatment.

Overview of Treatment:
Amanda currently resides in Wascana Long Term Care.  Amanda first spent over 4 months in the General Hospital in Regina, slowly making her way awake from a 2 month long coma.  We had family and friends at her side regularly encouraging and helping Amanda fight her way back to us. When Amanda was then transferred to Wascana Rehabilitation Center, our family had fought for a spot in Rehabilitation because we knew that Amanda had it in her to get better; the problem was that Saskatchewan doesn't have the care facility for a Traumatic Brain Injury patient.  After working with the team at Wascana, we soon discovered the limits of our health care system and the resources they could offer my sister.  She was often left in her bed for a half or full day with no stimulation or access to social activity.  They told us they simply didn't have the staff or she wasn't "on the list" that day.

Amanda's Next Big Steps:
Our family was fortunate to have some Dr's who knew the right private care professionals and helped us make some decisions that would change the outlook of Amanda's recovery.  We have hired a private massage therapist who took my sister's body from being spastic and crippled, to being able to move her hands, legs, and head on her own.  We then learned of a care facility who had the equipment to continue to build Amanda's strength, coordination and most importantly to help Amanda's brain relearn. The idea of Amanda being able to regain a life of fulfillment and be able to enjoy some of the activities she once enjoyed gave us a renewed hope. This care facility in Regina is called First Steps.

Amanda has been attending this facility for almost a year now and Amanda's recovery has not only impressed us, but her physiotherapist team has also been so driven to see what Amanda is capable of on a weekly basis.

Where Amanda needs your help:
This care facility is not covered under Saskatchewan Health Care.  Unfortunately Amanda also had Tort Insurance through SGI which gave her a limited amount of money for her care.  We've exhausted this amount and have begun trying to fund all of Amanda's additional care ourselves.  Amanda's Disability Benefit will cover her stay at Wascana and her taxi to transport her to therapy.  There is no additional funds left after that.

Our family is soon falling behind in the payments to First Steps.  Amanda's treatment require 3 visits a week which result in $2500/month of treatment costs.  The pictures (below in comments) themselves speak volumes to Amanda's progress and we know without this facility, Amanda would be left in a chair or her bed, with no hope for recovery.  As of right now, we are trying to raise $15,000 to continue the amazing work that the First Steps facility can do with Amanda.

Amanda means so much to me and we are fighting with everything we have. We want you to help us with this fight. You can do this in a couple of ways. We would be so grateful if you could help Amanda by donating through this page.

As well if you could share this link with others who care about Amanda we would really appreciate this.

Thank you with all our hearts,
Audra Hill and the Thomas Family
