Amanda's Transplant Journey

Hi there! My name is Emily De Melo and I am reaching out for support for my older sister Amanda.  Amanda is a 30 year old CF (Cystic Fibrosis) Warrior and is one of the strongest, most fierce women you will ever meet. She has been battling with CF since the age of 5 months old. Amanda received her first double lung transplant on November 9th, 2009 from a selfless, giving and loving donor and family. Because of the selfless choice to donate organs, this family gave my sister 11 more years. 11 more years to be my big sister, to fall in love, and to enjoy milestones with friends and family. Those 11 years have however, been filled with operations, hospitalizations, scary infections and all the other side effects that come with being a transplant recipient and CF patient. This November,  Amanda was hospitalized and it took a drastic turn. Amanda's lungs have stopped working. She is currently on an ECMO machine (artificial lungs/life support) that is doing the breathing for her and her only option left is a second double lung transplant. The waiting begins as we wait for another selfless and generous family to make the choice to donate their loved one's organs. Her transplant can be tomorrow, next week or in 3 months. With that being said, no one was prepared for this.  Amanda and her partner will have to relocate in Toronto to attend rehab and appointments following her transplant. Apartments range from 2-3 thousand per month in addition to living expenses and while rent is the largest expense, Amanda must also have her partner full-time living with her throughout the rehabilitation time. That support person will also not be able to work at the same time, which further adds to the financial burden. Many families following transplantation rehab are left in serious debt with little support from outside their families. At this time my family is asking for anyone to donate, share, send prayers and love towards Amanda. Any donation, no matter how small, can help make a difference and help in Amanda's journey through her second transplant. If there are funds remaining following Amanda’s transplant and rehabilitation time in Toronto, she will be donating the remaining of the raised funds to a charity of her choosing that is close to her heart.
