Amanda’s Small Cell Cancer Journey

From Amanda - “On 2/21 I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of Cancer called Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Cervix. This came to us as quite a shock since I've been healthy and have had no symptoms. The doctors found it on a routine pap, sent me for a biopsy which confirmed that our lives and soon to be first year of marriage were on a new path. This type of cancer can spread quickly and is so rare that you have 1-3% chance of having it. Yay me, right? Why couldn't that 1 and 3% chance win me the lottery?

On 3/14 we recieved a call about my PET Scan results. It came back showing the cancer was also in my liver. This means Chemo will start first and depending on how the cancer responds surgery will follow.

My oncologist sent over a urgent referral to Kalamazoo to get me in to see the Medical Oncologist to discuss my plan for chemo. They called shortly after and could get me in this Friday. Good news is I’ll be closer to home for treatments and have already claimed Brookes spare room if needed for the weeks I’ll have treatment which means a shorter drive to and from the hospital.

We still have a lot of questions we want to ask the Doctor from U of M. He was going to follow up with MD Anderson and we are hoping for a call tomorrow. We are slowly learning that any plans we have or just when we think we’re on the right track cancer may have a different idea. If you know me I’m a planner and like to have an idea of WTF to expect so I’m on the struggle bus with this.”

Amanda has always been a loyal, and caring loved one, friend and co-worker. She has been there for everyone around her in their worst of times. It’s now our turn to be there for her as she embarks on this fight with cancer. Let’s help her offset the costs associated with needed time off, medical and travel expenses.
