Hi everyone, I’m fundraising for my mom, Amanda Smith. My mom was in an accident in 2009 which resulted in her to have a double amputation of her legs, and her fingers, leaving her with half her left thumb, and whole right thumb.
Since 2009, my mom has went through the trials of learning to live and move completely different. She has only owned a manual wheelchair, as a result of difficulties with qualifying for a motorized chair with insurance companies. The one motorized chair she was given, was not compatible with my family’s limited transportation.
The manual wheelchair has been her only vehicle to family events, shopping, around the house, to and from appointments, going on strolls with my 3 year old sister, concerts, and strolls around Minneapolis that we love to vacation to. As a result of lifting and pushing herself for the last 11 years, she has intense shoulder pains, knots in her back & shoulders, and has debilitating migraines from the muscle tension, among other difficulties such as: pinching, burns from her wheels on hot days; slippery wet wheels in the snow; rolling over cracks/bumps/doorways and falling out of her chair; fatigue, discomfort & uneven distribution of weight on her chair seat causing skin problems. Lastly, the chair is quite heavy which makes it difficult for my mom’s main caretaker, my grandmother. Amanda LOVES going with her grandkids and my 3 year old sister to fun events like the pumpkin patch, the mall to see Santa and the Easter bunny, movies, concerts, shopping, the zoo, among so many other things, but having the chair she does, causes her to feel discouraged and at times believes it won’t be the effort to get out of the house, due to the strenuous effort it takes to transport and tag along.
She will need to begin her rehabilitation of her shoulders and with the chair she has, it would make the recovery progress prolonged. I am asking you to help my mom get the chair she deserves/needs so that she may have easy transportation to and from appointments, desirable and effortless memories with my family, and relief on her body from the labor of a manual chair. Talk of buying the chair she could only dream of having is out of reach with our limited funds, an “I wish.”
We love her and Amanda deserves to have an amazing experience in life ❤️ Grateful would be beyond the feeling we’d have in our hearts if we could make this dream of an amazing motorized chair, a reality.
