Amanda's battle against Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Donation protected
Amanda (Mitchell) and Rick Semmler of Akeley, MN are the parents of 3 young daughters, Marie 6, Elaine 4 and Lillian 6 months. Amanda had gone in to see her doctor for testing as she had been experiencing on going discomfort, on April 27th, 2021 Amanda received the news that she had Leukemia. That same day Amanda was sent to Sanford in Fargo and was admitted into the hospital to undergo further testing including a bone marrow biopsy and numerous blood transfusions. On April 29th Amanda was released from the hospital to spend the weekend at home with her family with the plan to return on Monday. On Monday May 3rd Amanda received the confirmation of the diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia where began receiving chemo that same day.
Acute Myeloid Leukemia is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that requires immediate treatment, with fewer than 200,000 diagnosed each year in the US. The medicine (Amanda prefers to call the chemo her medicine as it is a more positive outlook) will include 3 days of one type of medicine and 7 days of medicine being administered 24 hours a day, which requires her to remain in the hospital for at least the whole month of May and we pray that she will be in remission. Amanda will need to be in remission to receive the bone marrow transplant this summer that she is needing to help her battle this. During this already difficult time Amanda’s contact with her 3 young daughters, family and friends will be restricted as her immune system will be completely compromised and it will be more difficult for her to fight any other illnesses.
Amanda is the supervisor of children’s services (Child Protection and Children’s Mental Health) with Hubbard County Social Services where she has been employed for 8 years and Rick is self-employed farming and hauling grain. As Amanda undergoes treatment, we are asking for donations to support the Semmler family during this difficult time. Donations will go directly toward the family and medical expenses.
We would also love positive thoughts and prayers!
