Amanda Hendrix stroke recovery fundraiser

Update: After months of recovery and surgeries, Amanda has made the very brave decision to undergo a below the knee amputation. Her medical bills continue to grow and this new journey will add many more. Please consider donating to help her with this new part of her life!
As I create this fundraiser Amanda is beginning her third week in the ICU. On her 29th birthday, July 12, 2020, she felt strange. Her wife noticed her slumped over and decided to call an ambulance. Because of her age and general good health, they almost dismissed her symptoms as a panic attack. But Amanda and her wife Sarah insisted. Once they got her up and moving they realized she was showing classic stroke symptoms. Within minutes she was at UAB hospital and on her way to surgery. They removed the clot in her brain and discovered several more in her lungs and leg. They went to remove the clots in her lungs and that’s when the unthinkable happened. Our very young, happy go lucky girls heart... stopped. For 10 minutes. They put her on ECMO which is the highest form of life support. She was taken to the ICU but only briefly before she went back into surgery to remove the massive clot from her leg. She had to have a very large fasciotomy down her leg to remove the clot. During the procedure part of the clot broke loose and headed straight for her heart. Luckily the doctors were already working on her heart repairing a hole they found. Since then she has undergone several procedures and small surgeries. She still does not have feeling in one leg, has an open wound in the same leg, a major incision from her ECMO, lots of bruising and a VERY long road to recovery. She is still waiting to be released from the hospital. Once released she has a lot of physical therapy and procedures in her future. Before this whole incident her wife was unable to earn income due to COVID. Now they are both Unable to earn income. Insurance and FMLA will help some but due to the nature of her illness it won’t come even close to covering it all. If you can help even just a little, it will make a huge difference!
