Amaia Y. Rivera was born in May of 2015, bringing much joy and faith to our home; our second sprout of love; a genuinely loved and very special little girl. She came into our lives and reinforced the sense of Christ's love, faith and hope in all of us. 

In September 2016, after a "labor day weekend", we noticed, thanks to a relative, that her back did not look normal. Immediately thereafter, we took her to her pediatrician, who also acted quickly to refer her to an orthopedic specialist, who confirmed via X-rays, the dreaded suspicion…our daughter Amaia was diagnosed with Scoliosis, a deviation in her spine of 52 degrees. She was submitted to an MRI, which thank God, ruled out any neurological problems, but was diagnosed with "Idiopathic Infantile Scoliosis". We were informed that Amaia would need treatment immediately to be able to straighten her curvature since the deviation was considered “very advanced” given her age.

Finding out that our 16-month-old baby has this type of condition that it is generally found in women, and not common at all for a baby girl of her age, took us (parents) to what we could describe like a “blind eyes” encounter, filled with tears and words loaded with silence. Since then, we have not stopped praying, trusting more in God than ever before, and looking/researching for the best options for our precious daughter’s condition. So far, there are only two options:

·         Plaster cast, involves putting her through general anesthesia and intubation approximately every four months, or
·         ScoliBrace/European style vest, which does the same function but avoids the invasive process of the plaster cast

After comparing these options, we decided to opt for the ScoliBrace/European style vest treatment for our daughter. Unfortunately, this type of treatment is not common among U.S. Orthopedics or Chiropractors, but in our search we found one Chiropractor in Orlando, FL that works with this treatment, the only negative is that it is NOT covered by her medical plan. Unlike the older generations of rigid spinal braces, a ScoliBrace is designed to position the patient in an over-corrected position that is essentially the “mirror-image” of the patient’s original deformity. The outcome is a reduction of the abnormal curvatures in the majority of cases, in addition to decreasing rib humping, shoulder un-leveling, and other postural distortions. In most cases the overall posture and appearance of the patient’s body is greatly improved, and aids in avoiding surgical intervention of her spine.  At this time, surgical intervention is not an option for Amaia due to her tender age and the severity of the healing process.

The cost for the ScoliBrace treatment is $3,500 per vest, plus the costs associated with her follow-up visits.  We’re uncertain if she’ll need more than one vest in the process, because Amaia is still growing, and according to the specialists, there’s a 100% recurrence probability.

Rivera nació en mayo del 2015, trayendo mucha alegría y fe a nuestro hogar, nuestro segundo retoño de amor; una niña muy amada y muy especial.  Esa persona que llegó a nuestras vidas y reforzó el sentido del amor de Cristo, la fe y esperanza en nosotros; en septiembre de 2016, luego de un “labor weekend” en familia, notamos gracias a un familiar, que su espalda no se veía normal. Inmediatamente la llevamos a su pediatra y él también de inmediato la refirió al Ortopeda, el cual con unos Rayos X confirmó nuestra sospecha.  Nuestra hija Amaia fue diagnosticada con Escoliosis, una desviación en su columna vertebral de 52 grados.  Fue sometida a un MRI, donde gracias a Dios se descartó cualquier problema neurológico, pero fue diagnosticada con “Idiopathic Infantile Scoliosis”.  Se nos informó que Amaia necesitaría tratamiento de inmediato para poder enderezar su curvatura, ya que era una desviación muy avanzada para su edad.

Enterarnos que nuestra bebe de 16 meses tiene este tipo de condición que se da mayormente en mujeres, pero que para una niña de su edad no es muy común, consiguió que como padres cruzáramos miradas llenas de lágrimas y palabras cargadas de silencio.  Desde ese 
entonces, no hemos cesado de orar y confiar más que antes y buscar las mejores alternativas para ella, las cuales son solo dos a este momento: un yeso puesto a través de anestesia general y entubación
aproximadamente cada cuatro meses o un chaleco estilo europeo que hace la misma función pero evitándole el proceso invasivo del yeso.

Luego de comparar los procesos, hemos tomado la decisión de optar por el tratamiento para nuestra hija en el que se le estaría colocando un chaleco estilo europeo que no todo Ortopeda o Quiropráctico trabaja en E.U y a quien encontramos que lo trabaja es un Quiropráctico, que no está cubierto por el plan médico.  Este chaleco ayudará a mantener su espalda derecha para así evitar que continue la desviación en su columna y comience a enderezar su curvatura, y así mismo busca evitar en un futuro una operación de su columna, la cual es tan marcada que sería operable, pero para nuestra bebe no es una opción por su edad y además de lo invasivo del proceso.  Descartamos por este momento la opción de usar el tratamiento del yeso, buscando como padres la mejor alternativa para nuestra hija.

El costo del tratamiento de este chaleco es de $3,500 dólares cada uno más gastos de seguimiento, aún no sabemos si necesitará más de uno en el proceso, ya que mientras Amaia esté en crecimiento, tiene un 100% de probabilidad según los médicos, de volver a tener desviación en su columna. Nuestra confianza está puesta totalmente en Dios y en estos momentos utilizamos este medio para presentarles la situación de nuestra hija y apelar a su ayuda para poder lograr que Amaia pueda tener lo antes posible ese chaleco que ayudará a su proceso de sanidad.
