Greetings Family and Friends,
As a first generation college student, and an immigrant to this country I understand first hand the importance of education. My parents longed to provide the opportunities they were not afforded as young adults. Their purpose for migrating to America was to brighten my future and now I want to give back to the communities that helped develop me. I have found my niche within Student Affairs and Higher Education and I know the best is yet to come. My educational philosophy is to implore students to be subjects in their own learning so they develop into critically conscious scholars and productive members of society.
I am currently a Hall Director at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota and enrolled full time as a Graduate Student in the Leadership in Student Affairs master's program.
In my first year I have balanced academics, my internship, and being an undocumented graduate student. This means that I do not have the ability to receive Federal Financial Aid, and currently under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy. I was able to advocate for myself and am the recipient of the Leadership, Policy and Administration Merit Scholarship from the Educational Leadership Department. While this achievement has aided in my financial obligations to the institutions, I still have a significant balance.
I have had various part time jobs to to support myself throughout this educational journey, but have had to stop working because my work eligibility has lapsed with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. This left me unable to work from October 2016 to February 2017, and I was not able to contribute to my balance. I now have the ability to work but am balancing a full graduate load, my assistantship, and three additional part time jobs.
My goal is to use education as a form of liberation for students to be conscious citizens in their pursuits of creating a just and compassionate world in their field of interest.
Your contributions will go directly towards my education in the form of my tuition balance and the purchase of required textbooks for my professional library. Most importantly, it will allow me to persist through the program to graduate May 2018.
Any amount is greatly appreciated.
Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance.
With love and gratitude,
Amadou Fofana
