Alzar: To Rise, To Elevate
Donation protected
My name is Cedar Bertelsen. I’m a teenager in Bozeman, Montana and a sophomore at Bozeman High School. Being born and growing up in Montana has many perks, such as the great outdoors being right in the backyard and having a close-knit community. It is an ideal, sheltered place to be a developing human being. However, along with being sheltered comes a naïve view of the world.
I now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand my worldview with the Alzar School based in Cascade, Idaho. This program combines rigorous academics with cultural exchange, outdoor adventure, and leadership skills. About forty sophomores and juniors from around the country are selected for this program whose mission is “to build leaders who will positively impact the world.”.
My adventure will begin August 18th this year and will take me to the river canyons and mountain ranges of Idaho, to small villages in Chile’s Andean mountains, and the wilderness of Patagonia. I will end the semester with a culminating leadership project to address a need in my home community. I will also be receiving credit in my own high school, for all the classes I take with the Alzar School (pre-calculus, AP environmental science, honors English III, AP U.S. history, and Spanish).
This is an opportunity for teenagers to enrich their learning experience, not just academically but globally. I’m especially looking forward to developing leadership skills through outdoor experiences with my peers while travelling and learning about another culture. I believe that learning about other people in different circumstances than mine will allow me to broaden my horizons and will change my life forever.
It is empowering to know that I have this incredible chance to take. As a teenager my perspective is young and bursting with different thoughts which traveling the world could only enhance. Traveling is one of the few things in life that I am sure about, and to be able to go on this trip would be a dream come true.
My family supports me in making this decision, and I have been working towards making this a financial reality. I was awarded a substantial scholarship by the Alzar School based on my interview and application essay. I work as a gymnastics coach; I mow lawns, shovel sidewalks, and do odd jobs for friends and neighbors and have already saved $3000 to pay on my deposit for the semester. I will continue to work and save money up until I leave for the Alzar School.
In return for your financial support, I will invite you to my final presentation of my culminating leadership project. I’d be happy to talk about fundraising, Alzar https://alzarschool.org/ , or my goals. Thank you for considering this request!
