Join Us on a Journey to Empower and Support People with Disabilities and Help Get an Adaptive Bicycle for Aly!
On June 11, 1989, my life was forever changed. Along with 20 fraternity brothers from Pi Kappa Phi, I embarked on a transformative journey, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, heading to Washington, DC. This wasn't just any ride—it (along with the previous years’s first team who bicycled from Southern California to DC) was the birth of what is now known as the #JourneyOfHope. Inspired by Bruce Rogers' historic 1987 solo ride, the event benefits our national philanthropy, The Ability Experience (AbEx), dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities.
From humble beginnings, our summer ride has grown into the largest fraternal fundraising and awareness event of its kind. We've expanded into multiple teams, cycling thousands of miles across dozens of states, carrying a powerful message of acceptance and understanding. In 1997, AbEx launched a shorter ride, Gear Up Florida, furthering our mission and reaching new areas.
That 1989 journey was pivotal for me, providing confidence to tackle future challenges, starting with law school and extending into various adventure sports. More importantly, it cultivated a deep passion for volunteering and helping those less fortunate, teaching empathy that has guided me through many charitable efforts.
The greatest impact, however, came full circle in 2003 with the birth of my daughter Alyeska "Aly." Born after a tragic accident, Aly faced numerous diagnoses, including Cerebral Palsy and Autism. Now, after 20 years in public school, as she transitions to an adult day program, we face new challenges, particularly the need for exercise and social interaction.
Our dream is to embark on long bike rides together, fostering shared experiences central to AbEx's mission. This year, I'm proud to participate in the inaugural Gear Up New York (GUNY) ride from Buffalo to New York City. As we raise awareness, we're also fundraising to support the disabled community. Our team has already raised over $110,000 for AbEx, and we're launching a specific GoFundMe page to raise $15,000 for a special Hase Pino adaptive bicycle for Aly.
Aly’s radiant smile and personality have touched many. I invite you to support this cause with a donation. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps create a world of inclusion and opportunity. PLEASE DONATE TO HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
