My name is Aly Nguyen and I am a rising High School Senior. Ever since I was a little girl, I watched my mother and father examine their patients and help enhance their patients' sight via prescription contacts, glasses, and medication. As a little girl, I couldn't wrap my head around what they did. All I knew was that a person would walk in not being able to see, and they would come out exlaiming, "Wow! I didn't know trees had leaves!" To my little mind, my parents were magical.
As an older version of the mystefied little girl, I still want to learn about the magic of medicine. I want to use that magic to better our community and save lives one day. After all, "It takes a village to raise a baby." A statement I believe is true. Every person's life affects another's; consequently, every life is simply too precious to allow them to go down without a hard fight.
What exactly does all of this money go towards? The goal for the medical internship is $7,000. The internship stretches over the span of 17 days in India (a little over half a month). Within that time period, students--such as myself--will intern in Indian hospitals, observing surgery and aiding patients clinically.
Why India? Due to America's liability laws, students under a certain age are prohibited from clinical practice. India's laws, however, are more lenient and allow for students to experience hands-on practice--to me, an incredibly valuable and crucial part to medicine.
My goal in life is simple, I want to help people in any way possible. Whether it is through volunteer work, medically assisting them, or just listening to their story, I believe everyone deserves a chance to feel better about themselves.
