Alva is one of the sweetest persons you’ll ever meet. At the young age of 18 years old she has been through more than anyone should ever go through. But that has never tainted her kind spirit. Alva had been experiencing frequent painful headaches as well as feeling lightheaded. Then unfortunately days later, on 12/8/23, Alva received the news her grandmother passed away. The very next day Alva started experiencing strange symptoms leading to psychosis & the need for hospitalization. She then entered a catatonic state. Upon many tests and procedures, the cause of her symptoms became known. Alva was diagnosed with Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. So far this is what we know:

-Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis occurs when the immune system mistakenly targets neurons in the brain, causing inflammation (encephalitis).

-The reasons why anti-NMDA receptor antibodies are formed is not yet fully understood.

-This form of encephalitis affects about one in 1.5 million people.

-Recovery is generally slow and may occur over months or even years.

Alva’s father passed away 3 years ago, and her mother is the sole provider of the household. Alva has 3 younger siblings, all whom still need her mother very closely. Due to Alva being hospitalized in the PICU, and placed on a ventilator, her mother has been unable to work. It is with great desire, that we want to help Alva and her mother during these hard times, especially around the holiday season. We are asking for donations, so that Alva’s mother, Maria is able to take a sigh of relief knowing she can fully be present for her daughters. Any amount is appreciated. God Bless!

Alva es una de las personas más dulces que jamás hayas conocido. A la temprana edad de 18 años, ha pasado por más de lo que nadie debería pasar. Pero eso nunca ha contaminado su espíritu bondadoso. Alva había estado experimentando frecuentes y dolorosos dolores de cabeza, además de sentirse mareada. Luego, lamentablemente, días después, el 12/08/23 Alva recibió la noticia del fallecimiento de su abuela. Al día siguiente, Alva comenzó a experimentar síntomas extraños que le provocaron psicosis y la necesidad de hospitalización. Luego entró en un estado catatónico. Después de muchas pruebas y procedimientos, se conoció la causa de sus síntomas. Alva fue diagnosticada con encefalitis anti-receptor NMDA. Hasta ahora esto es lo que sabemos:

-La encefalitis anti-receptor NMDA ocurre cuando el sistema inmunológico ataca por error a las neuronas del cerebro, causando inflamación (encefalitis).

-Aún no se comprenden del todo los motivos por los que se forman anticuerpos anti-receptor NMDA.

-Esta forma de encefalitis afecta aproximadamente a una de cada 1,5 millones de personas.

-La recuperación es generalmente lenta y puede ocurrir durante meses o incluso años.

El padre de Alva falleció hace 3 años y su madre es la única proveedora del hogar. Alva tiene 3 hermanas menores, y ellas todavía necesitan mucho a su madre. Debido a que Alva fue hospitalizada en la UCI y conectada a un ventilador, su madre no ha podido trabajar. Con muchas ganas queremos ayudar a Alva y a su madre en estos momentos difíciles, especialmente en la época navideña. Estamos pidiendo donaciones para que María, la madre de Alva, pueda dar un suspiro de alivio al saber que puede estar plenamente presente para sus hijas.
