ALTO Fundraiser Earthquake in Turkey and Syria

On 6th February 2023 the world woke up to the devastating news of the earthquake that ripped through South East Turkey. While most of us have watched on in horror at the massive scale of destruction and lives lost, the people of Turkey and the wider region have been dealing with it day in and day out.

The ALTO Board considered, for a moment, its position on holding our 25th Anniversary conference in Istanbul. Wondering whether the event would be appropriate amidst the hardship being faced. We were reassured, however, by colleagues in the region, that to go ahead as planned, shows faith in and solidarity with the people of Turkey and to cancel would stow fear and stop much needed funds going into Turkey.

So, we go ahead as planned, with what is sure to be one of our best conferences yet, in the beautiful city of Istanbul.
