Since 2008, Royal Oak's Interact youth Rotary club has worked not only to raise funds for charities, but to directly assist those in need with their bare hands. Working through the National Relief Network, 50 or more high school students will test themselves in endurance and skill as they learn to clear trees, disassemble homes, and rebuild lives of those who for so many reasons cannot afford to escape the damage from natural disasters.
But some of the most awesome hearts in our school cannot afford the $725 it takes to reach our destination for a week of work in February. Your donation to this Team-Level GoFundMe will allow the Interact advisor and Royal Oak Schools teacher, Steve Chisnell, to distribute funds to students who cannot fully complete their payments.
Past trips have found us working:
--Alongside the Army Corps of Engineers three weeks after the F5 tornado in Joplin, MO
--Part of the largest coastline restoration project in human history replanting trees in the swamps of New Orleans
--Reaching a non-English speaking Vietnamese community in Galveston following Hurricane Ike to provide them first assistance
--Removing trees from dozens of homes following a 90-tornado outbreak in Alabama
--Rebuilding a home after the floods of Nashville
--Working through the cold of February to erase the final tornado damage from communities in Arkansas
. . . and all the time meeting some of the most amazing people whose good lives have been challenged by real catastrophe.
Support us here, or support any of the individual students below who are on our team! And thank you.
Steve Chisnell
P.S. The "beneficiary" name you see here is our finance secretary for the school system who manages our accounts.
P.P.S. Here is a comment from alumnus Leah Liszak about the impact of this program.
