My name is Adam Parker. I am currently a senior at the University of Rhode Island. As many of you know, I've devoted the past four year to the sport of football. My responsbilities as a Division 1 student-athlete and captain forced me to make many sacrifices. One sacrifice being the opportunity to experience other cultures in a study abroad program. However, going in to the tail end of my academic career, I took it upon myself to fulfill the experience I've longed for. Instead of embarking on the typical spring break trip, I've decided to travel across the world. For my first time leaving the states, I will be taking part in an alternative-spring break trip in Kathmandu, Nepal.
This alternative spring break trip is no Cancun beach party, it is a mission to deliver the hope of peace and nonviolence to a nation emerging from 10 years of civil war and internal political conflict. Myself and friends from the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies will travel halfway around the world to conduct Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation training for Nepali peace activists and university students. We will conduct the training in collaboration with several Nepali nongovernmental organizations, including Collective Campaign for Peace, Center for Peacebuilding & Reconciliation Promotion, and Social Work for Development. Also participating will be students from Tribhuvan University’s Conflict, Peace & Development Studies Program.
Additionally, as someone interested in Buddhism, I will have an opportunity to visit the home of the Buddha in Kapilavastu, Nepal. Non to mention, we will have the opporuntiy to witness the beauty and spirtuality of buddhist monastaries.
My trip is going to be from March 9th - March 20th. The cost of the trip is expensive, but I could not pass up this opportunity to make a difference. The cost will include Air fare, food, hotel and other miscellaneous costs. Please help me make a difference in Nepal!
