Already Victorious: Supporting Khira Through Her Breast Cancer Journey

Our beloved friend Khira has recently received the heartbreaking news that she has breast cancer. Even in the toughest moments, she finds a way to make us laugh and lift our spirits. Now, as she begins her journey through treatment, surgery, and recovery, she needs our support more than ever.

Khira was diagnosed with two types of breast cancer: invasive ductal carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). This diagnosis has brought a whirlwind of appointments, decisions, and unexpected turns. Through it all, Khira has remained her strong, hilarious, and resilient self — continuing to uplift those around her, even while facing the fight of her life.

She has made the incredibly brave decision to undergo a double mastectomy, which is tentatively scheduled for mid-May. What was originally expected to be a one-time surgery has now turned into two major surgeries, spaced months apart. Due to the type of reconstruction required, Khira will first receive tissue expanders and then undergo a second reconstructive surgery three months later.

This delay creates an unexpected and overwhelming financial burden. Since Khira is a teacher, her insurance plan resets on September 1st. Because the two surgeries will fall in different plan years, she will now have to pay two full out-of-pocket maximums — doubling the cost of her care.

At the same time, Khira is beginning treatment to freeze her eggs — a step that gives her the option of having children in the future, as upcoming treatments will force her into medical menopause. Fertility preservation is rarely covered by insurance, making it yet another critical expense she must shoulder on her own.
