There are certain people that God has placed on this earth to teach others how to live a full life by finding joy in the most difficult times. Shirley Kina Nagata is one of these people.
Just recently, Shirley went through a series of tests in which doctors discovered she is in need of a bone marrow match as soon as possible. She was diagnosed with leukemia caused by past radiation and chemotherapy treatments she has gone through.
Five years ago, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ureter and Bladder Cancer. Fifteen years ago, she was treated for Breast Cancer. The intense chemotherapy and radiation treatments she received during these times caused her current condition. It has been a series of very trying years for Shirley and her family.
Prior to being medically disabled, she worked for 28 years as a teacher. Her love for children was and still is so evident and she has impacted all the young lives she's taught through teaching in schools in Lahaina, Kahului, and Honolulu. Outside of teaching, Shirley loves shore fishing for oama or whipping for papio with her husband. They also love attending UH Volleyball and football games. Go Bows!
She has remained so strong and faithful all these years and continues to fight for her health with the strength of her family and the Lord. She has been married to her high school sweetheart, Glenn, for 38 years and together they have two beautiful daughters. Shelby (her eldest daughter) has blessed her with two beautiful grandchildren and Kelcie (her youngest daughter) will be getting married this October.
Anyone who has ever met Shirley can attest that she is such a warm and giving person. Despite all she has already gone through, she makes anyone and everyone feel special and loved. We are humbly asking you to help the Nagata family with the extensive medical bills that will come with Shirley's journey to a cure. She will need to travel to the mainland to receive many of her treatments. While no person or family should have to endure the hardships that Shirley has and will go through, we can help to ease the burden of worrying about how they will pay for the impending costs.
Shirley is also humbly asking for your consideration in being a bone marrow donor. If you are a match, you could possibly cure her cancer and give her the best opportunity to live out the rest of her life as the best wife, mother, and grandmother she has always dreamed of being. If you are interested in getting more information on how to be a possible bone marrow donor, please visit www.bethematch.org. Shirley will be starting her treatments very soon and we will keep you all updated on her progress. Please continue to send your prayers and well wishes. Thank you for your support!
