What Is ‘Almost Normal?'
A Film
‘Almost Normal’ is an energetic, rambunctious dance film directed and choreographed by Eliza Malecki . A deep dive into the wonders of collaboration, this project will feature the work of visual artist Alaina Montuori , filmmaker Olivia Moon, animator Lisa Lam, and dancers Aliza Franz, Erin McNulty, and Isabel Ball. The creation of this film is based on the notion of abstracted reality, imagining if we increased the color saturation of the world and shifted everything 5 inches to the left. In ‘Almost Normal,’ Malecki’s signature use of gestural precision, humor, and quirky athleticism take on a new level of maturity while maintaining the spirit of joy and humanity prevalent in all of her choreographic work.

A Public Art Experience
In line with Eliza's mission to bring joy and humor to audiences and movers alike, this project will also be an ongoing performance project taking place in public spaces throughout the greater Boston area. This will be a workshop to performance opportunity designed to be taught to ensembles at any level (beginner-professional) within an intensive period of time. The choreography from the film will be adapted into accessible movement vocabularies built to be taught to larger groups and performed publicly directly following workshops. This will be carried out through community partnerships TBA.
The set created by visual artist Alaina Montuori for the film will also serve as a portable and transformable set piece for this iteration of the project.

Where Your Donation is Going
Donations to ‘Almost Normal’ go directly towards dancer salaries, collaborator stipends, and research/development. We are fortunate to have received partial support through grants to get this project off the ground, but that covers only a fraction of what it takes to produce a project of this scale. Artists are chronically underpaid despite the years of specialized training they undergo to be able to practice their art form professionally, and this is your chance to directly contribute to the enrichment of Boston’s local arts landscape.
