We are Allison and Bear. This page was set up by some dear friends of ours who want to help us and give others the opportunity to help. When first approached with this idea we said no thank you. We are people that help others, not people who ask for help! We have a long history of helping others, even to this day. We could fill this page with things we have done for others in need, but that recognition is never why we have done them and would cheapen our compassion for our brothers and sisters in need. After getting some devastating news about Allison’s current situation, she told me I needed to tell the person who set this page up, what is really going on with us. While talking to that person, I was told that we have been there for so many other people, now we needed to give those people and others the chance to be there for us when we need them.
Some background: Just before we met, having just finished nursing school, as a single mom of two, Allison had just gone through a fight with an aggressive breast cancer. She had been through chemo and had radical surgery. She was still recovering from the surgery, still taking the awful meds and her hair had just started growing back. Even with all that going on, the sparkle in her eyes captivated me! We eventually married (it took a while for my pathetic attempt at a pick-up line to work) and put together a life. With a blended family, things were tough at times but we got through them together. One of our children has a serious medical condition that has required constant vigilance and has taxed our resources and efforts for many years. A little less than 3 years ago, our 27-year-old, unmarried daughter lost her life in a car accident. I hope that nobody reading this has felt that pain, but if you have, you are uniquely qualified to understand the effect that had and continues to have. Shortly after that, Allison’s grandmother, who helped raise her passed away. Then in February of last year, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and was gone in October! We have helped where needed or shouldered the burden in one way or the other. It’s been a rough couple of years, but that isn’t all. In December, Allison was diagnosed with yet another aggressive breast cancer!
They couldn’t use the preferred treatment method, because Allison has already received the lifetime dose from her previous cancer. She has been through 4 more rounds of chemo and more radical surgery. We got the results of the pathology last week. 20 of the 25 lymph nodes removed had cancer in them! This was devastating because instead of being at the finish line, we find ourselves back in the midst of the battle. They have ordered 6 more months of chemo and radiation. She has at least 2 more surgeries to go through. Because of a very rare genetic issue, radiation is extremely risky! We are frantically looking for treatment options but they have to happen quickly!
More than anything else, we need your prayers! Pray for healing. Pray for peace. Pray for strength, wisdom and guidance. Pray for others who find themselves in similar situations. Pray that somehow, some way, our situation or our example will make a difference in this world or in the life of someone else. Allison encourages everyone to do regular self-breast examinations and follow-up with your doctors if there are any changes.
The truth: our finances have been taxed beyond our means for quite some time. We have some major issues with our home which have gone without repair for far too long. But we have been and continue to be blessed. Maybe not with all the money we need, but with relationships that have helped us make it to this point. If you can help, please do so. If you can’t, God bless you! I hope we have the opportunity to help you one day!
