Mabel Yayen was born in Bamenda, Cameroon to Yayen Yenla Mariana and Sylvester Fonyuy on February 18, 1984. Mabel moved to Northern Nigeria with her mommy when she was 10 years old. There, she completed her primary, secondary and part of her university studies. She moved back to Cameroon in 2006 and later relocated to the United States in November 2010. She married Edwin Che (Checho) on December 23rd 2010. They have two kids; Marlene (7 years old) and Audrey (5 years old). Mabel worked seasonally at Costco as a customer service representative.
On September of 2012, she found a cyst on the back of her right knee. A biopsy was done in April 2013 and it was then confirmed she had cancer. The diagnosis given was Soft Tissue Sarcoma. The news was painful. She was devastated, scared and in pain. Mabel had to process this devastating news and was in denial for couple of months (who wouldn’t be). She decided to get other opinions from other oncologists regarding the treatment plan, side effect and prognosis. She was started on research drugs for 9 months. At the time she was going through all this, she was enrolled into the Bachelor of Science in nursing program at Western Governors university.
The year 2015 was a great year for Mabel. School was going well and her health was equally good. In February of 2016, she had some respiratory symptoms and diagnostic studies indicated the cancer was back and had spread to her lungs and brain. From then on, she was in and out of the hospital being treated for associated symptoms and also completed some radiation treatment as well. She lived the last few months of her life in excruciating generalized pain, severe breathing problems and other associated symptoms. Mabel fought hard. Finally, she passed on to the Lord on September 2, 2016 at 11:30pm at Kaiser West Los Angeles at the prime age of 32.
She leaves behind a husband, two beautiful daughters, sisters, brothers, parent and family back in Cameroon. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
