Support Jennifer and Hanson Relocating to Philly

To the friends and family of Jennifer Kim and Hanson Oh,
We are reaching out to our extended network to provide support for Jennifer and Hanson during this challenging transition in their lives.
As many of you may know, Jennifer gave birth to baby Allen on October 21, 2023. Throughout their stay at St. Jude hospital, Allen was diagnosed with congenital hyperinsulinism, a rare medical condition needing specialized care. As a result, they were initially transferred to CHOC so that Allen could receive intensive care in the early days.
Hyperinsulinism (HI) is a genetic disorder in which the insulin cells of the pancreas, called beta cells, secrete too much insulin. Excess insulin causes low plasma sugar (hypoglycemia) or low blood sugar. Low blood sugar can be very dangerous, because the brain needs a constant source of sugar. If the brain doesn't get the sugar it needs, it can lead to seizures, brain damage, and possibly death.
Congenital HI is a rare disease, affecting 1 in 50,000 babies. Most children’s hospitals encounter only one or two cases a year, with most doctors never having encountered the disease ever in their careers. Because of this, it is crucial that Allen receive medical care from an experience treatment center, such as the Congenital Hyperinsulinism Center at CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia), which is #1 in the nation.
In November, Jennifer and baby Allen were flown via medical emergency jet to Philadelphia so that Allen could receive continued care. Since then, they have been fortunate to receive quality care and comfort while staying nearby at the Ronald McDonald house, a nonprofit that supports families with children on difficult medical journeys. We are immensely grateful for the doctors and medical staff who have cared for Allen during this time.
While their long hospital stay of nearly 80 days is coming to an end, they have made the challenging decision to relocate long-term to Pennsylvania so they can be in proximity to CHOP, where Allen will continue to receive specialized care for his condition.
Although, this journey brings unforeseen challenges, we are hopeful that this is the best decision for Allen and his future.
At this time, we're reaching out to our community in hopes that we can unite together to support Jennifer and Hanson in this difficult transition. Your support, whether through prayer, donations, or sharing their story, can help lighten the burden that comes with relocation.
We aim to utilize your financial generosity for:
- Essential medical expenses/equipment for Allen once he is discharged
- Temporary housing prior to finding long term housing close to the medical facility for convenience and accessibility
- Covering transportation costs for relocation- moving costs, security deposits, etc.
- Supporting Jennifer and Hanson’s daily needs during this transition
Your contribution, no matter the size, becomes a beacon of hope in their journey. We deeply appreciate your kindness and willingness to stand by us during this time. Together, we can make a profound difference in Allen's life, ensuring he gets the care needed to thrive.
Thank you for considering their story and being part of their journey toward healing and brighter tomorrows.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Team Baby Allen

Christmas 2023

Early days at CHOC - awaiting diagnosis

Had a couple scary moments before we knew the root cause of Allen's sudden drops in blood sugar

So thankful for the amazing medical team at CHOC and CHOP. This is getting ready to board the most expensive flight to Pennsylvania.

Lie-flat window seat

At CHOP - the view from Allen's window.

Getting settled in. The doctors at CHOP are specialists in HI.

Doing some arts and crafts with Mom

You might be in the hospital, but you'll still have to put in some tummy time!

Now just waiting to be discharged...
