Allan Sargent, 67 yrs old, has always been an active, working man who has been passionate about mountain biking for 30 years! He's been married for 43 years to Debbie, and has 2 grown daughters, Katie Roy & Christie, & 2 darling granddaughters & 2 sons in law, Mike Roy & Aaron.
Allan's life was changed forever on March 13th, 2022 when he suffered a freak fall from his mountain bike, hitting rocks & breaking his neck resulting in paralysis from the shoulders down. Allan had a C4,5 fracture along with Thoracic compression fractures of T1-3, as well as a broken nose and shoulder injury. (And he would tell you that his bike was fine! )

Al was unable to move at all and could hardly breathe from the extensive injuries . Luckily he was discovered by another mountain biker, the rescuers contacted emergency personnel & he was helicoptered off the Cheseborough trail to Los Robles Trauma Hospital in Thousand Oaks, California. He spent 2 weeks in ICU and their rehab unit. Allan slowly regained some feeling in his arms, torso, legs... eventually feet as well. He started to have tiny movements in legs, feet and arms.
He was moved to Northridge Rehab Unit on 3/30/22 which is an amazing place! Weeks went by and Allan slowly gained strength & function in his legs. The Physical therapists got him on in his feet, and eventually he was able to take steps with much support.
His arm and hand function is very limited at this time. The Occupational therapist medical staff said that hand function is the last thing to return in this type of hyperextension neck injury. Allan is unable to feed himself or do any activities of daily living. He cannot get himself to sitting position or transfer to his chair without 2 people to assist him. He has no control over bowel or bladder function.

Unfortunately, his Medicare advantage insurance just discharged him from Rehab after 8 weeks on 5/28/22. The physical therapists all agree that if he continued with intensive therapy, he would be walking in 6 months. However, insurance will only pay for 2 to 3 hrs of PT PER WEEK compared to Northridge Rehab unit where he was getting 3 to 4 hours of therapy PER DAY!

Allan's younger daughter Christie and her new husband Aaron had to cancel their NC wedding as it was scheduled for May 2th, two weeks after the bike accident. They just moved back from North Carolina to CA to live with Debbie & Allan to help with his full time care.
Additionally, Debbie was diagnosed with early breast cancer and had lumpectomy surgery last month. Debbie will be still undergoing treatment. She'd been diagnosed just few weeks before Allan's injury.
So needless to say, it's been a terrible couple of months!

Throughout it all, Allan has maintained his positive attitude and determination to regain function. He's been working hard to return to his life and work.
Insurance does not pay for transportation, supplemental physical therapy, or any ongoing in home caretakers for Allan. Allan wants to maintain and improve his ability to feed & care for himself and eventually walk. He wants to return to his accounting work, but cannot use his hands at this point. He wants to enjoy life and play with his dogs and his grandbabies.
This has been devastating and overwhelming for our family. We are humbly asking for financial help, as we really need it at this time for Allan's ongoing care and loss of income.
Thank you for any help you can offer, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Sincerely,
Debbie, Allan, Aaron & Christie Sargent & Katie & Mike Roy
