Hello! My name is Anne-Gaëlle Thiriot and I am a freelance dance artist.
I am going on a residency for a week at the end of July 2020, and I would like to ask for your support.
I will be starting an exciting project, re-creating a dance piece by Albert Quesada called Solo on Bach & Glenn.
I love this work and how essential the notion of listening is in it. In this difficult period for society, the economy and the arts, we need work that will soothe our soul and contribute to promote connection, mental health and wellbeing, as well as to keep up integrity in the practice. I think this piece really serves these purposes, and I’d like for it to reach far and wide, and be shared and embodied with a greater range of wonderful dancers, people and audiences.

A little more background:
The Goldberg Variations, which were published in 1741, were originally written to relieve the insomnia of Count Kaiserling and to be played by his pianist Goldberg. Bach is known for using improvisation a lot when composing music.
I am fascinated by how improvisation, choreography and performance connect in creation and in life, and by the different ways into collective makings in which people share authorship and responsibility.
At the heart of this work are the notions of ‘Dancers as choreographers’, dancing as agency, and interpreting as a creative act. There is also the sense of giving away and open-sourcing an artwork rather than copyrighting it, letting its evolution be part of its identity.

"The story of this piece Solo on Bach & Glenn started in 2005, consolidated in 2008 and became the duet in 2010; it has been touring since then in many different countries, performed by the four different dancers who know the piece, in different constellations.
This piece originally built up quickly, and went through a needed transformation over the years.
It started with the studio recordings session of the Goldberg Variations where Glenn Gould combines his playing, singing and comments on the music, and followed by a scripted conversation about the most crucial elements of his approach to being an interpreter.
Inspired by Gould and receiving feedback from the practice that this piece generates, an intimate relationship developed between words, music and movement, and we have been sharing this with audiences since 2005.
I was very glad to be approached by Anne-Gaëlle and her desire to bring the intricacies of this dance work to a larger group of dancers, movement lovers and eventually to a broader audience community.
This work that Anne-Gaëlle wants to make invites us to re-evaluate past actions, invites to collaborate, grow and to listen to each other with care."

I have a vision that can go far if you come on board with us!
We want to test new ways of planning, producing and financing choreographic work, which we have imagined to face the international health situation, geographic isolation and strained public funds for the arts.
Most of the collaboration will happen with Albert Quesada and Petra Söör, who also knows and has performed the solo and duet versions of the work. Petra is a wonderful dancer, performer and facilitator, and I love dancing and working with her.

General Overview:
Here is the general idea in four steps. I’d like to multiply the versions of Albert’s work, by:
1. Learning it myself
2. Revisiting the duet form with Albert and Petra, to understand the various relationships between bodies, minds and music, decide and plan how to expand and transform the original piece into an ensemble work for 6 to 30 dancers.
3. Making the ensemble piece with professional dancers, ideally up to 30 (the number of the original Goldberg Variations!). It will be built on the many solo versions made by a unique cast of brilliant performers, and will create a new version called: All these Variations.
4. Finally, creating a blueprint of the ensemble piece as a touring choreographic project. In it, local dancers and performers, professionals and amateurs, would meet and work together over an intensive period of time towards a high-quality performance, guided and in collaboration with Petra and myself. Every version would be unique and adapted to the group and context.

First step:
Here we are on step 1! It is about me learning the material and build up my own solo version. I will be alone in the studio with Albert and Petra remotely via screen, due to Covid-19. I will be hosted at La Ferme du Grand Béon in Burgundy, France, from 27 July till 1st August, and I’d like to have you with me!
Helping me on this first step:
- You will give full-time work to one dancer for a week, or maybe to two or three if we reach the sums where Petra and Albert can be with me online.
- You will make the future of this project possible.
- You will support the arts and the development of independent projects, which have freedom of artistry and realise personal and collective visions with care.

How the funds will be used:
I aim to gather £1,800 / 2000€ by the 1st of August, so within 4 weeks. But whether we reach the aim or not, contributions will be received and will support, in the following order:
· My wage for a full-time week of work: £600/ 650€ for 6 days of work based on a choreographer / an experienced dancer’s wage in the UK in a subsidized context.
· Albert and Petra’s wage on pro rata: ideally £600/ 650€ full-time (£15/h); their working times and hours will depend on the sums we manage to collect.
· Any amount going beyond the needs for this first step of campaign will be directly re-invested in the second step of the project.
· 8% of the overall received contributions will be redistributed towards charities Young Minds (UK-based) and PSSM (France-based), which support mental health and educational and developmental programs, in particular for young people and in relation to racism for Young Minds.

Publiées en 1741, les Variations Goldberg furent commissionnées au départ afin de calmer les nuits d’insomnie du Comte Kaiserling et d’être jouées par son pianist Goldberg. Bach est connu pour avoir beaucoup improvisé dans ses compositions musicales.

J’ai une vision/ idée qui peut aller loin si vous embarquez dans cette aventure avec nous; étant donnée la situation sanitaire actuelle, nous souhaitons tester de nouvelles manières de planifier, produire et financer un travail chorégraphique, que nous avons imaginées pour faire face à cette période d’isolation géographique et de manque de fonds publics pour les arts bien appauvris.

3. Re-créant une pièce d’ensemble avec des danseurs.ses professionnel.le.s, idéalement jusqu’à 30 (le nombre de variations écrites par Bach!). Elle serait basée sur les nombreuses versions solo d’un casting d’excellents performeurs, et deviendrait une nouvelle version appelée: “Toutes ces Variations”
4. Au final, en créant une “maquette” de la pièce d’ensemble qui deviendrait un projet chorégraphique en tournée. A chaque nouveau lieu, danseurs.ses et performeurs locaux, professionnels et amateurs, se rencontreraient et travailleraient ensemble à la réalisation d’une version de cette pièce, guidée par Petra Söör et moi-même. Chaque version serait unique et adaptée pour le groupe et le contexte.

Ici nous sommes à la première étape, qui consiste que j’apprenne le materiel et que je construise ma propre version solo. Je serai seule en studio avec la présence par écran d’Albert et Petra qui ne peuvent pas se déplacer, en raison du Covid-19. Je serai accueillie à la Ferme du Grand Béon en Bourgogne pour une semaine: du 27 Juillet au 1er Août inclus. Et j’aimerais que vous soyez avec moi.
En m’aidant pour cette première étape:
· Vous donnerez du travail à une danseuse pour une semaine, voire à 2 ou 3 si nous atteignons suffisamment de fonds pour avoir Albert et Petra en ligne avec moi.
· Vous rendrez le futur de ce projet possible.
· Vous supporterez les arts et le développement de projets indépendants qui ont une liberté artistique totale et réalisent
des visions personnelles et collectives avec soin.
