I have a muscle wasting condition called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. I’m fundraising £6,300 to cover essential upgrades for a Quickie Q300m wheelchair.

After months of emails, assessments and discussion, the NHS (through AJ Mobility) has offered me the basic Q300. However, the chair I actually need to live safely and independently requires essential upgrades, including more powerful motors, increased battery range and seat riser which are not covered by the NHS.

The photo on this page shows me in my travel wheelchair. That’s because, unbelievably it’s actually more comfortable than my current main wheelchair even though it’s only designed for short-term use. I’ve reached a point where I’m using a chair that was never meant for my everyday life, simply because my current wheelchair has become so uncomfortable. This isn’t sustainable and it’s starting to take a real toll on my health and independence.

I’m also currently a full-time Film and TV student, trying to build a career doing what I love. Having the right wheelchair isn’t just about mobility it directly affects my ability to attend classes, work on film projects, get to shoots and fully participate in my course. This new wheelchair will give me the freedom and reliability I need to live safely with dignity and pursue my passion, without being held back by equipment that doesn’t meet my needs.
