All hands to La Ola Fresca

As many of you know La Ola Fresca is an independent cafe, in Benimaclet, founded by myself, Helen Westwater on a few personal savings. We are now in the 10th year of our magical roller ride which we were hoping to celebrate in October. That was until COVID-19 happened and the ensuing tragedy and chaos. Of course this changes everything. I say ‘all hands on deck’ as I’m looking for a little help to get through the next few months and to be able to reinvest to optimise La Ola Fresca’s inherent strengths for the challenges ahead.
Like many small businesses in Spain we have received no government aid and have no income to pay the forthcoming bills that face us in the next few months. This leaves me with the unpalatable option of either folding the business which would still leave me in debt or taking out a government bank loan which would increase my vulnerability in these uncertain times.
This fund request is obviously not directed at anyone who also is in a vulnerable situation and I appreciate mine is not a life and death situation of which there are far more worthy causes. However I do refer to La Ola Fresca as ‘we’ (sorry people here comes the crunch), because although it is my personal project, I have also always considered it a family project, with the people who have worked with me, my clients and suppliers included. From the early days of Benimaclet Entra, Circuito Vermut and more recently with Setem and Xarxa de Cures we have always strived to be a community cafe with free trade and locally purchased products.
We cannot pretend we know where this is all going to end but we certainly know that even when we are able to reopen our doors it is going to be a very different situation. The economy will be undermined and probably there will also be no Erasmus students or tourists in the first year. Therefore if La Ola Fresca were to survive, a certain amount of reinvention will be required and that is where part of this fund would be destined.
On the positive outlook for change after COVID-19 I can foresee a resurgence in people wanting to eat more healthily, being more interested in home cooking skills and products, community and learning English. These are all I can proudly say strengths of La Ola Fresca but need more developing, marketing and also transgression into a potential online market. There is a book in the wings and home cooking videos and online classes can start straight away with a bit of technical aid. The cafe itself needs renovation, some reorganising of the internal space to allow more space language exchanges , workshops and rainy days.
I cannot promise t-shirts or free coffees at this stage, but welcome literally any donation. I will and I hope you as well, will be grateful if La Ola Fresca not only survives this challenge, but also survives as a stronger La Ola Fresca. I intend to fight for it and hope you will too.

Como sabéis La Ola Fresca es un café independiente en Benimaclet, fundado por mi, Helen Westwater, con unos pocos ahorros personales. Ahora estamos en el décimo año de nuestra mágica montaña rusa y esperábamos poder celebrarlo en octubre. Así eran las cosas hasta que el COVID-19 sucedió y con su consecuente tragedia y caos, lo ha cambiado todo.
Sólo puedo decir.... all hands on deck!/¡manos a la obra! queriéndome referir a que estoy buscando un plan para poder sobrevivir los próximos meses y recaudar algo de dinero para reinvertir en optimizar La Ola Fresca frente a los próximos desafíos.
Al igual que muchos de los pequeños negocios en España, todavía no hemos recibido ayudas del gobierno y no dispongo de los ingresos para pagar las facturas y gastos de los próximos meses. Esto me deja en una encrucijada: o cerrar mi negocio con deudas o gestionar un préstamo ofrecido por el gobierno que incrementará mi vulnerabilidad en los tiempos de incertidumbre que se avecinan.
Evidentemente esta petición no esta dirigida a personas que se encuentran en una situación precaria como la mía. Soy consciente de que por suerte no se trata de un caso de vida o muerte y sé que existen causas más nobles y necesarias.
Cuando hago la referencia a la Ola Fresca en plural como "we" quiero dar a entender que, aunque este es mi proyecto personal, siempre lo he considerado como un proyecto familiar en compañía con las personas que han trabajado conmigo, con mis clientes y con los proveedores. Desde los primeros días en Benimaclet Entra o Circuito Vermut y recientemente también con Valencia Ciutat Amable, Setem y la Xarxa de Cures, siempre hemos buscado contribuir a nuestra comunidad, trabajando con productos de proximidad y comercio justo.
No podemos pretender que sabemos a dónde va a ir a parar todo esto pero sí sabemos que, incluso cuando nos permitan volver a abrir nuestras puertas, todo va a ser muy diferente. La economía será incierta y probablemente no haya estudiantes de erasmus o turistas durante el primer año. Es por eso que, si La Ola Fresca quiere sobrevivir, necesitará reinventarse. Y a ello estarán dirigidas vuestras donaciones.
Mirándolo por el lado positivo, después del COVID-19 puedo predecir que habrá un resurgimiento de gente que busque alimentarse de manera más saludable, que se interese por aprender a cocinar, por desarrollar actividades en comunidad y por aprender inglés. Con orgullo puedo decir que precisamente estos son algunos de los pilares clave de La Ola Fresca. Para poder potenciarlos necesitarán de un mejor desarrollo y promoción, quizá también de una transformación hacia el potencial mercado online.
Por el momento estoy escribiendo un libro y los videos de cocina junto con las clases online podrían empezar rápidamente con un poco de ayuda técnica. La cafetería como espacio en sí necesita una reforma básica y un poco de reorganización para poder dar más capacidad a intercambios de idiomas, talleres y días lluviosos.
No puedo prometer camisetas ni cafés gratis en esta etapa pero agradezco cualquier donación aunque sea poca. Yo, y espero que vosotros y vosotras también, estaremos felices si La Ola Fresca puede además de sobrevivir a este desafío, crecer más fuerte.
Mi intención es luchar por ello y espero contar con vuestra ayuda a mi lado.
