On Tuesday, our family’s world was turned upside down. Our great niece, Aliyah Flores, a bright and loving 16-year-old, went into sudden cardiac arrest while at Hollister High School in P.E. Class due to a condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).

She had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. Thanks to the quick actions of two incredible staff members, Katherine Berryhill and Casey Lester, who immediately performed CPR, and the school’s AED machine, her life was saved. It took five shocks to bring her back, and she was rushed to Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, where she remained unconscious for three days.

Right now, Aliyah is awake and in the Cardiac ICU, facing a long road to recovery and awaiting surgery. While we are so grateful that she is still with us, the journey ahead will be challenging—for her, and for her family.

We are raising funds to help cover:

Medical expenses and specialized cardiac care

Travel and lodging costs for her family as they stay by her side

Lost income while her family takes time away from work

Ongoing support she will need as she heals and regains strength

This has been a terrifying, humbling experience, but also one filled with gratitude. We cannot thank enough the staff members who performed CPR, the first responders, and the amazing medical team at Stanford who continue to fight for her recovery. They are true heroes.
