Help Us Continue Production on A Little Gay on the Prairie

A Little Gay on the Prairie is a feature-length documentary following queer people who are building lives, families, and communities in rural USA.

Over the past two years, we’ve completed two production trips across the Midwest. Our first was made possible by the support of friends, family, and our community through crowdfunding. This year, we returned to the road with support from the ITVS Incubator Fund, an initiative connected to public media, allowing us to deepen our relationships with our participants and expand the scope of the film.

Now, we’re raising funds for our next phase of production.

We’ll continue following Ashley, a transgender woman in her 60s who has spent much of her life on her family’s Nebraska land; Olivia, a transgender pilot from rural Missouri navigating the consequences of policies that have threatened her ability to fly; and Bryan, a nonbinary dirt-track race car driver building a life with his fiancé in rural Nebraska. As their lives evolve, we want to be there to capture the ordinary moments, major changes, celebrations, conflicts, and contradictions that make their stories whole.

We’re also continuing to meet and film additional subjects throughout rural USA, expanding the documentary into a larger mosaic of queer people who have chosen to stay, return, and build lives in places they call home.

A Little Gay on the Prairie is now fiscally sponsored by From the Heart Productions, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which means contributions to the film are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Individual donations will directly support continued production, including travel, crew, equipment, accommodations, and the time required to follow these stories responsibly over the long term.

With two production trips behind us and support from ITVS, we’ve already captured the beginnings of something special. Your contribution will help us keep showing up, deepen these stories, and continue building a portrait of rural queer life rarely seen on screen.
