Dear Friends and Family,

As many of you know by now, Alicia suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm on Sunday, January 7 around 4 pm. As our first godsend would have it, she was at home with Louis who was able to respond immediately. Alicia was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where she had a CT scan that revealed a subarachnoid hemorrhage (blood in the brain released from the ruptured aneurysm). A drainage tube was then placed to prevent fluid buildup and relieve pressure on the brain. Late Sunday evening, Alicia was transferred up the street to Tisch Hospital, where a family friend of the Smarts ensured that she was in the hands of Dr. Howard Riina, a renowned neurosurgeon who has been fantastic. Early Monday morning, Dr. Riina successfully performed an endovascular procedure known as "coiling" to repair the bleeding aneurysm.

Alicia continues to amaze us with her tremendous strength and resilience. Following Monday's procedure, she progressed steadily throughout the day, gaining awareness and lucidity as the day went on. She has proven her ability to speak and swallow and has use of her arms and legs. Incredibly, her spirit and wit have been unencumbered, as evidenced by her repeated requests that Willard be admitted to the ICU.  She is afraid but her strength is remarkable and her bravery is steadfast. She is a tough little thing, and we are standing by her side as we watch her move mountains.

As he faces the unimaginable, Louis is a beacon of composure. His strength is unwavering and infectious. The Repeczkys and Smarts are lifting each other up and pooling their strength and love for Alicia.

The Repeczkys and Smarts are in awe of the outpouring of support and love that is being shown to Alicia as they have received an incredible amount of food, gifts and other items, rendering Alicia's hospital room an obstacle course due to the kindness friends and family have shown. We are setting up this campaign in order to manage some items that might best support Alicia's current needs, as well as defray some of the financial costs that Louis has. Please note that the best support Alicia can receive is cards, messages and well wishes, and remember the power that your thoughts and prayers have already had and will continue to have, especially in the face of what we know are inevitable feelings of helplessness. The road ahead will be long and hard, but Alicia and Louis and their families are surrounded by an incredible support system bound together by a formidable love. Thank you all, so much, for being a part of that.
