Stepping up for Alice’s Dear Care Partner Mason

March 27th, 2020 marks a tragic loss in our world of stroke survivors and their care partners. On that day, Alice McCormick suffered a massive heart attack that took her away from us way too soon.  She was a Philly girl, gave Michael Jordan wing span hugs, was a special ed teacher, had 5 children, danced on the original American Bandstand, and, even though with speech aphasia, had a flair for speaking out.

Aphasia is a communication disorder brought on by brain injury or stroke.
Alice had her Stroke back in 2015 and rehabilitated her aphasia with strength and grace.
She improved greatly with Mason at her side always encouraging her.

"Nothing says I love you more than becoming a care partner." -Mason

It’s definitely a tragedy to lose any partner. But Alice was more than just a regular person. She evolved into a larger-than-life, statuesque, witty, brilliant, hilarious, generous woman. She was the Aphasia Network's bright light and inspiration who gave its participants many memorable laughs.

Here is Alice enjoying herself with everyone at Aphasia Adventure Camp Northwest back in August 2019. She joined some initially reluctant participants in 100 feet of plastic, water, Dr. Bronner's soap, a blow up ducky, and became a very satisfied customer.

You can read even more about their past shenanigans at Mason's blog here: http://masonloika.com/

During September 2017, Alice and Mason (the respected, transplanted writer from Miami we know and love) moved to a lovely 2 bedroom condo in Longview, Washington, that suited their modest needs.

This post he wrote from the cat's point of view is absolutely legendary: http://masonloika.com/millie-takes-a-walk/

When Mason lost Alice, he realized a heightened tragedy.

Now Mason's beautiful, sassy, one-of-a-kind, loving life partner has passed.

Mason hopes to revive his distinguished writing career and offset the essential income lost to Alice's demise and fulfill the promise Alice asked of him the day before she perished.

Any contributions big or small are welcome and will definitely help ease his path ahead.

Your donation will help:
*Mason not to worry about having to leave where he and Alice lived and loved.
*Avoid the added trauma that moving out would impose during this time of insurmountable grief.
*Will ensure Chloe, the beloved cat has Alice-approved accommodations.
*Facilitate Mason's promise to Alice so he can work on his book.
*Help with Alice's final expenses.

Your love and support is so greatly appreciated.

An email with a note of kindness or a memory of what Alice meant to you are welcome and encouraged and can be sent to Mason at: [email redacted]

To keep Mason safe please consider sending all condolences electronically.

I know many of you have stories, memories, laughs, or pictures of Alice.
Please consider sharing one of your memories of Alice to include on a future update with me at [email redacted].

Sincerely,

Kailey Cox

Dearest Alice,

I made this go fund me page for you and Mason using tiny hands because you always asked me at camp, "Where are your tiny hands?" They're right here girl! I will always bring back tiny hands in your honor for the humor, silliness, easy connection and hilarity you contributed to Aphasia Camp and Couple's Retreat.

You always encouraged me to be myself, connect with & love others. I love you and will miss you terribly. When talked just last week I'm so glad I got to say, "I love you", and, "goodbye", before you left us.

Your spirit will live on in the love you have imparted to me and so many others. You have changed me for the better. I am so glad you were here.

Rest in peace my beautiful friend.
We will take care of Mason for you; he truly is one of the good guys.

Love Always,
Kailey
