Hi Friends, Family, and everyone,
We know the holidays are here and people are getting ready to celebrate with their friends and loved ones, but for the my family, we are looking at the four walls of a hospital and a long road to recovery for our sister/daughter, Alice. Earlier this week, Alice went to the hospital with severe pain and blisters that were starting to develop all over her body. Unfortunately, Alice was misdiagnosed, told she could continue taking medication she was on and sent home. Her symptoms worsened overnight because the very medication she was told to continue taking was making her sick. Alice returned to the hospital the morning after being released and was finally admitted. Large, painful sores covered her body, her mouth, she could barely breathe or speak. Even going to the bathroom caused her severe pain. Yet, the hospital did not start treating her until later that night. She was running a high fever and continued to be in severe pain because imagine the worst blister you’ve ever had, now imagine that all over your body, and inside – not to be graphic, but it’s important to understand Steven Johnson Syndrom, what Alice was finally diagnosed with. Because it’s SO RARE! There are fewer than 20,000 cases a year, and it’s caused by an adverse reaction to medication. With a better understanding of what she was sick from, we pushed to have her transferred to a hospital where she could receive proper care and have specialists watch over her. Alice is currently at the ICU Burn Unit in Brooke Army Medical Center located inside of Fort Sam Houston base in San Antonio, one of the best military hospitals in the world with one of the top burn units in the US. Why does she need to be in a burn unit? Because these blisters have caused burn like symptoms all over her poor body and she has lost well over 60% of her skin and will continue to lose the rest of her skin.
What does this mean for her and for my family? Relocation to San Antonio to be close to Alice who’s looking at 3 months in the ICU, 3 additional months in a regular unit at the hospital, and then 3 - 4 more months of physical therapy. Financial support for her young children while she’s unable to work. Yes, Christmas for Alice and my family will be in the hospital, but what could help us is YOU. My family is in need of financial help to be able to stay close to Alice and also for Alice to not leave the hospital with bills she can not afford. We know it’s a hard time of year with the holidays to ask for money, but we hope that you will help with any amount that you can. No amount is too small if there’s enough people who can help us. Please contact Elizabeth if you have any questions and we really ask for Alice to stay in your thoughts and prayers and hearts this holiday season as she recovers from this horrible disease. Thank you in advance for your kindness!
