We are a group of aging ramblers who were moved by the bravery and journey of one of our own. Alfred is the grandson of Rosie, our fellow Rambler and friend. He is now 10 years old, but was born with a serious Congenital Heart Defect. Alfred had his first open heart surgery when he was only a few weeks old. He has had several major heart surgeries since then. Six months ago he had pioneering surgery to replace the two largest valves is his little heart with adult sized ones. He is one of a very small number of children to have had this procedure. He has made remarkable progress since his last surgery, and continues to surprise and delight all those around him. His is a big Liverpool FC fan and has started playing golf.

Rosie has told us over many years of her admiration for the work done by all the staff in the Paediatric Cardiology Department of The Birmingham Children’s Hospital. She and her family have raised funds for them previously. We as a group felt that we would like to share in the appreciation of the staff at BCH and as a result are attempting to walk the Ivanhoe Way in a day. This is a circular walk in Leicestershire of 36 miles. The walk is taking place on Saturday 28th June, with a 6am start in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, supported by family and friends. This challenge will be very demanding and push us way beyond our usual walking limits. All the funds raised will go towards helping the wonderful staff on Ward 12 who have looked after Alfred so amazingly well all these years.
