On July 1, my dad, Alfredo, was hospitalized in Guatemala with pneumonia and tested positive for COVID-19. On July 8, he suffered a stroke as a result of four blood clots found in his brain, which has left him with paralysis on his entire left side. He is stable, but his lungs still have quite a bit of fluid as he struggles to beat this virus, and they are not able to discharge him yet. The hospital bills so far are at $32,000 USD and rising. My dad does not have any health insurance so we are paying entirely out of pocket. The hospital has already sent a second bill, and credit card payments are also coming due in the next month.
