Hi, my name is Keyla Terrazas, and I'm raising funds for the medical bills of my father, Alfredo Terrazas.

On Tuesday, October 12, my father broke his neck and severed his spinal cord in a horrible car wreck. A car was stopped in the middle of the highway, and swerving traffic caused my father's car to crash into it. The airbags worked, but my father severed his spinal cord at the level of C4-C5, paralyzing him completely from the neck down. He also lost the ability to breath on his own, needing a respirator machine to help him breath.

For the past 3 weeks, he has been in the Intensive Care Unit in Monterrey, Mexico. He is in a special "Halo" traction device for his neck, and has had severe life-threatening medical problems including pneumonia, low blood pressure, fevers, bed sores and his bowels are not working right. He has a tracheostomy (a hole in his throat to breath through) and a g-tube (a hole in his stomach to eat through). However, he still needs a surgery to stabilize his head on top of his neck, so that he can stay upright in a special wheelchair

At this point, we don't know whether he will live or die. If he lives, he will require total support for the rest of his life, including special equipment in the house, nursing care, therapy, medications, and other things.

My father supported his family here in Rio Bravo, Mexico. Although he works hard making windows in his business, my family does not have much money, and we cannot pay for his medical bills, either now or in the future. What makes our situation hard is that we don't know how much he and we will need, or for how long.

So far, the hospital costs for my father have been around $30,000 (US currency) and his neck surgery for stabilizing his neck will cost $20,000 (US currency). We are asking family, friends, churches, the community, and any one else to help with these costs. My father did not have health insurance when he was injured--it's common in Mexico for people to go without this coverage.

Since his situation is so uncertain, we are asking for $50,000 (US currency) to pay for his hospitalization bills and his needed surgery. The surgeons won't perform the surgeon without at least $20,000 since this is just the costs of the materials required. His bills will probably become hundred of thousands of dollars, although we hope at some point to need much less. We just don't know right now.
