I've been interested in fighting human trafficking since I was about 13 years old. That was around the time I developed my passion for those who've been wrapped up in violent conflict, genocide, and enslavement.
Discovering a lot of the content involved with that knowledge was very heavy, but it allowed me to direct my steps and seek guidance for a long period of time. It was during this time that I learned about IJM - they popped up almost everywhere that the worst traffic in human beings occured. I kept a note of this, and I ended up graduating from Sacramento State in 2013 ten years later with a degree in Criminal Justice/International Relations and set my sights on developing myself in a way that would lead me to contribute to the fight.
I commissioned into the Active Duty Army as a Second Lieutenant at the beginning of 2014 and spent the majority of that year training in the Infantry Branch. By the time I graduated from Ranger School, I had begun hearing news about the damage that ISIS had begun inflicting on innocents in Syria and Iraq like the Yazidis, and my determination became even more intense.
My time in Active Duty has recently ended, but I am now in a position to act with more freedom. While I do intend to continue to serve by joining a California National Gaurd Special Forces unit, I will not truly enter the long selection and training process until the Fall. Until then, I have been honored to be selected by IJM to intern with them this Summer in their Investigations and Law Enforcement Development Department in Washington DC.
The opportunity is the chance of a lifetime. The head of the ILED department at IJM is the former NCIS head, Mark Clookie, who has revolutionized the way IJM trains and assists local law enforcement agencies in country. Their department is a hub of experience and knowledge, and serves as the nexus for IJM's worldwide law enforcement development operations.
I've started this fund to raise around $7,000 to cover the costs of the internship as guided by the intern and fellows recommendations at IJM. This would cover food and lodging, transportation, and costs of living for the Washington DC area for almost three months. My goal is to raise this by June 1st, as the internship begins on June 12th, 2017.
Many of you whom I've grown up with already know my story, and have been crucial in my growth. I've been consistently surprised and blessed by the support and love God has shown me through His people everywhere I go, and could not be more excited to see where He takes me.
"No man is an island entire of itself; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
