My sister, Alex, contracted a rare bacterial infection after a trip to the river in March of 2014. She has been to countless doctors, specialists, and hospitals, tried an obscene amount of antibiotics and therapies, and endured 4 surgeries since February 2015. She is currently in the hospital and had another surgery yesterday, which is already appearing to present complications. She has a 5-month-old baby and her new family is in tens of thousands of dollars in debt due to all of these surgeries and extended hospital stays. My sister did not have short term disability insurance when this began and since this infection is considered to be pre-existing, her days out of work passed her alotted sick days are subtracted from her much-needed paycheck.
