Hi there,
My name is Alex Karn. I am a parent to a fiercely intellegent and happy six-year-old, a husband to my always loving, accepting and goofy high-school sweetheart, a writer and photographer for Peterborough This Week, and also a transgender man.
I am working to raise the funds for a double masectomy procedure to remove breast tissue and contoure my chest to a natural male configuration.
This procedure will mean the world to me, as for years I've had to use specialized "binders" to compress my breasts in order to decrease my feelings of self-loathing and discomfort with this aspect of my anatomy.
Doing this has helped me to function basically in society
without too much emotional discomfort, but it has also caused and continues to cause damage to my body by restricting blood flow, pressing on my ribs and making it difficult to breathe when wearing the binders for more than a few hours.
Surgery will eliminate the need to wear these binders and will also allow me to experience everyday things I've missed out on for many years, such as going out with friends and family after spending the day at work without worry about hurting myself, going swimming, and wearing just a t-shirt in hot weather.
I had my initial consultation with Dr. Hugh McLean on August 4th and have since scheduled surgery for January 4th, 2016. The total cost of the surgery is $8,475. With my current savings and ongoing savings schedule I will be able to pay for $5,000 of this and I am doing whatever I can to raise the money for the rest.
