Alexis's Hip Surgery and 6-Month Recovery
Donation protected
Hi friends, I'm Kimberly and I'm fundraising for my dear friend and amazing painter, Alexis Trice. She has been suffering from hip dysplasia and the search for a diagnosis took two years. She's been in a lot of pain and unable to walk well. Alexis is getting Periacetabular Osteotomy surgery on October 21, 2022, but it's going to be a long recovery. (PAO gory details: This involves cutting the pelvis around the entire acetabulum, which is then moved into a position that better covers the femoral head. Usually, three or four screws are used to hold the acetabulum in its new position. Over time, new bone will grow where the cuts were made, fusing the acetabulum to the rest of the pelvis.)
Alexis is unable to work for at least three months; she will be on crutches for six weeks and even unable to sit upright in a chair for a long while. Fortunately, some of the medical expenses will be covered but the cost of living in NYC is not. I'm raising funds for her monthly expenses - rent, food, transportation - and for additional medical expenses that aren't covered by insurance - $1500 uncovered surgery fee, more crucial physical therapy sessions than are covered, a wheelchair rental, a walker, crutches, and helpful showering devices.
Unfortunately, Alexis has had over a dozen surgeries since 2008 (loss of kidney and appendix, labral repairs due to hypermobility, complex endometriosis excision surgeries, etcetera) and deals with various chronic illnesses. She may need the other hip done down the line too, but we'll hope fervently that's not the case.
My little note about Alexis: When I was on crutches in NYC, she took me into her apartment so she could help me, and when I lost my own apartment shortly after due to injury-related financial fallout, she took me in again. Her generosity always vastly outweighs her requests.
Alexis would love to offer something to express her gratitude and for every $100 donation, she will send you a print as a token of appreciation. Please send your mailing address via the Contact button.
You know how frightful our medical system and relentless expenses can be and it would be lovely for her to recover from this major surgery without also constantly worrying about how to survive.
You can also support her by purchasing beautiful things in her shop:
Our deepest appreciation - Thank you for supporting her during this time!
