I am Alexis McCain, a 3rd year law student at UIC Law. I will be graduating in May of 2024. I hope this post finds you in good spirts. Today, I humbly ask you to donate to my campaign to cover my bar exam expenses.
To share a little about me, I am a first-generation college student and law student born and raised on the South side of Chicago. As a small child, I knew I wanted to be an attorney, it was destined. Since I was able to talk, I always knew I had a profound passion advocating for others. As people say, “I was built for this.”
As of today, 5% of attorneys are Black / African American. These numbers have not increased within the past 10 years. Today, I am reaching out to you to help me add to the 5% of Black attorneys.
To become a licensed attorney, you must pass the bar exam upon graduating from law school. The bar exam is one of the most rigorous exams known to mankind. Additionally, the exam is known to be very expensive. Enrolling in a bar prep course could cost thousands of dollars, not including the cost to sign up for the exam. A BARBRI course costs $2,999 alone. BARBRI is the most common bar prep course that produce the best results and highest passage rates.
Your contributions will help increase my chances of passing the bar exam the first time. Several factors, including economic challenges are barriers that prevents students from passing the exam. Students are expected to study 3 months; It is not ideal to work while studying for the bar. However, some people including myself cannot afford to take time off to study due to bills and basic living expenses.
I will take the bar exam in July of 2024. The deadline to enroll for the bar exam is February 15, 2024.
The proceeds from this Go Fund Me will be used to cover the bar exam, bar prep courses, and living expenses for May-July while I study for the exam.
Thank you all for reading my story. I will be immensely grateful for any contributions. Please donate whatever you can for this cause, all donations are accepted. If you are unable to donate, please share this link so it can reach a larger audience.
Thank you all for helping me on my journey to becoming the first attorney in my family. Your support will not go unnoticed.
Sincerely,
Alexis McCain
