Hey everybody,
It's DeLorean, the kid haha. An amazing person I know, Alexis, needs some help but is a little too shy to ask. So, I'm trying to help her get what she needs because I feel like her success will be a benefit to us all. She is passionate, empathetic, and sincerely wants to help people, so I want to help her:
I'm starting this campaign in hopes of helping my friend, Alexis, with her transition to Houston where she'll be starting a new chapter as an elementary school teacher at a predominately Black elementary school.
I've known Alexis since we were kids, her older brother, John, was someone I looked up to. Unfortunately, John was tragically taken from us in 2006. As the child of a single mother, Alexis' story is one of perseverance, start to finish. After barely graduating high school with a 1.8 GPA, Alexis enrolled at Santa Monica College where she found the confidence in herself she needed to succeed. She spent most of her time at SMC with a 4.0 GPA before transferring to UCLA. She would go on to graduate with honors, completing a senior research thesis focused on the way the child protective custody system in the United States unfairly targets Black mothers.
Alexis is passionately about social justice and creating new opportunities for Black and POC students. After taking a year off after graduation, she has decided to join Teach for America. In a few weeks, Alexis will be headed to Texas to shape the minds and build confidence in the new generation of young people. Although Teach for America does give a stipend for its member, the money is insufficient to cover the full cost of moving from LA to Houston. To make matters worse, the current economic climate brought on by Coronavirus has placed some additional roadblocks in the way of her transition. So, the reason I have created this GoFundMe is to help Alexis with the moving cost and transitioning to Houston. This includes getting an apartment, a car, and the necessities to survive until the paychecks start rolling.
