Alexander Esty's Heart Surgery
Alexander Esty is an exceptionally bright, funny, 10 year-old little boy, who just so happens to have a secret underneath his shirt. Before Alexander was born it was discovered that he had multiple heart defects. Individually they were quite common, but taken together were very rare. He had a quite complicated surgery at 7 days old, and then more than a year of recovery, physical therapy, and weekly appointments.
Alexander has continued to have regular appointments with his Cardiologist, who as a child Alexander nicknamed "The Jelly Doctor" due to the jelly they put on his chest for his echocardiograms. He has had lung profusions, MRIs, more echos, you name it. All of these were to watch for this moment in time:
It is time for Alexander's next heart surgery. It is time to replace the synthetic conduit that gets blood to his lower body, and to hopefully give him a missing valve.
We have been told that we would be at the Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville for around a week, with then around 3 weeks of recovery at home. At this time we don't know if home health care or physical therapy will come into play, but we will know more about that after our surgical consult on May 8. Surgery itself is scheduled for June 17. We are hoping to have Alexander recovered well enough in time to start school on August 10.
We have started this GoFundMe account because we honestly don't know what is going to happen financially through this. I (Karla, Mom) have some PTO time, but not this much. Jason (Dad) has no PTO time available to him, so any time taken off for Alexander will be unpaid.
Any money raised through this account will go towards family expenses during the process, and towards the medical bills that insurance will not take care of. Again, at this point the medical expense is unclear. We will know more after the consult with the surgeon. Anything that could be left over after these two items we will happily donate to a children's medical charity, IE. Ronald McDonald House, Children's Hospital, Saving Little Hearts, etc.
