Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read AJ’s story.

AJ was truly one of a kind; full of life, laughter, and innocence. He greeted everyone with joy, no matter how long it had been since their last visit, and he never held grudges. Everyone who met him felt the warmth of his smile and the light he carried with him.

When AJ was born, doctors informed his mother, Regina Ruiz, that he had a rare and severe neurodegenerative disorder called Leigh syndrome. They warned that he might only live up to two years old, and that he would likely never walk, talk, or live like other children. There was no cure, and few known cases in the U.S.

But AJ was never one to accept limits.

Against all odds, he learned to walk, talk, and do everything his brothers could do. For a time, he was just like any other little boy; playing video games, watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and celebrating every holiday with excitement.

His favorite holidays were Halloween, when he could dress up as his favorite character Michelangelo, and Christmas, when he loved watching everyone’s faces light up as they opened gifts. Regina would buy everyone at least 20 small gifts just to see his smile.

As the years passed, AJ’s determination amazed everyone who knew him. People adored his smile, his unique spirit, and even his famously long eyelashes that made everyone jealous.

When walking became difficult, he scooted around using his strong arms and legs; sometimes trying to scoot to the far side of the bed just to avoid taking a shower. By age nine, AJ could no longer walk or talk as he once did, but he still found ways to communicate. He would say his favorite word, “No!”, when he wanted things his way, and gave thumbs up or down to answer questions.

Even as those abilities faded, AJ’s laughter and joy never disappeared.

Regina gave her entire life to care for AJ, filling his days with love, adventure, and purpose. Together, they created beautiful memories: traveling, hiking, sightseeing, exploring abandoned towns, jet skiing, and horseback riding.

Though his body grew weaker, AJ’s spirit never dimmed, and he continued to bring joy and strength to everyone around him.

On August 19th, 2025, just one month shy of his 17th birthday, AJ peacefully passed away, surrounded by his loving family. Though his time here was short, his light, resilience, and laughter will forever live on in our hearts.

We are now asking for support to help with the financial burden of AJ’s passing. Any contribution—big or small—will go directly toward his funeral services and celebration of life, his cremation, and supporting our family during this difficult time.
