Save Sea Turtles!
Sea turtles! The beautiful, elegant and serene creatures that majestically maneuver through the oceans are loved and cherished by many. For millions of years sea turtles have been performing vital functions that help to maintain healthy marine ecosystems. As sea turtles graze, they keep seagrass length in check. Seagrass beds act as essential breeding and developmental grounds for many marine species. Sea turtles help to control jellyfish and sea sponge populations, maintain productive coral reef ecosystems, and transport essential nutrients from the oceans to beaches and coastal dunes.
Sea turtles face a variety of threats at each stage of their life. The odds are never in their favor as it is estimated that only 1 in every 1000 sea turtles will survive to reach sexual maturity. We must do everything we can to give sea turtles a fighting chance!
Climate change, overexploitation, marine pollution and urbanization are just a few of the human-caused threats that are pushing sea turtles closer to extinction. As sea turtle populations decline, so does their ability to carry out crucial ecosystem functions. Nearly all sea turtle species are classified as endangered as they have dangerously declined in the past decades. But, through combined conservation efforts and implementation of new protections in the US, Central, and South America, it is possible for sea turtles to recover!

About Sea Turtle Recovery
Sea Turtle Recovery, STR, is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization located inside Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. STR is dedicated to the rehabilitation, preservation and conservation of Sea Turtles. STR’s goal is to rehabilitate sick or injured Sea Turtles for their release back to the wild. The Sea Turtle Recovery educates the public on the important ecological role of sea turtles, threats endangering them, and ways to protect their future. STR provides staffing, food, medicine, surgeries and other treatments to sick and injured sea turtles until they can be released back into the ocean. Sea Turtle Recovery also performs outreach throughout the region to raise awareness about sea turtles.

Why Donate?
Sea Turtle Recovery needs funds to support sea turtle preservation, conservation and education programs. Since being established two years ago, the nonprofit has already rehabilitated and released 27 sea turtles. This can be very expensive as one blood analysis for a sick or injured sea turtle in rehabilitation costs over $80! In severe cases, Sea Turtle Recovery has spent over $3,000 in blood work alone during a sea turtle's recovery. However, rehabilitation and release helps to ensure sea turtle populations thrive, and they are asking for your help!
