On Friday, November 16th, Alex was in a horrific automobile accident due to a high speed police chase of a stolen vehicle which was estimated to be traveling at 80-100mph.
Alex was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where 3 life-threatening injuries were immediately identified, and she was rushed into emergency surgery. She was ultimately diagnosed with massive internal bleeding, a ruptured spleen, bruised liver, bruised pancreas, bruised colon, minor head trauma including to her right eye, a fractured sternum, multiple broken ribs, a punctured and collapsed lung, multiple pelvis fractures, a hip bone fracture, and multiple fractures of the lumbar (lower back). In addition, she had numerous lacerations a couple of which required stitches. Alex was put in a medically-induced coma-like state and on a ventilator. She was deemed to be in critical condition, and we were told that we should expect her to be in the Intensive Care Unit ("ICU") for 6-8 weeks, in the hospital for 2-3 months and then to rehab for at least 6 months.
To date, Alex has had a total of 4 surgeries and 2 of the 3 life-threatening injuries have been stabilized. However, additional surgeries are anticipated. She remains in ICU but once stabilized she will be moved to a high dependency unit; and ,as her recovery continues she will be moved to a general ward before transitioning to long-term rehabilitation.
She has a long road of recovery ahead of her. If you would like to help offset some of the expenses of her immediate and long-term care, please consider making a donation. All donations- big or small- will be greatly appreciated.
We thank you for all of your love and prayers for Alex.
Love,
Sue (Alex's Mom)
